Keep food in original bag better or to plastic container?

I keep unopened bags in the original bag. After it is opened I keep it in the plastic tub (it happened to come with my food as a promotion, but I used to use a tin from popcorn at Christmas).
Seems to me it stays oilier (which to me is akin to fresher) when it is in the plastic. Just my opinion.
 
I also find it easier to scoop from the plastic tub. Of course, it only lasts about 6 weeks in my house, so I guess it is a bit of a mute point in my home! Just look for the newest/longest freshness date you can find.

I keep my in the original package even after its opened mainly because of their nice wax packaging.  I do have a big rubbermaid dog food keeper container that I put the 30-40 # bag in and I just put the whole thing in there. However now I have two formulas and it don't have two containers so I keep the one without a container also in the original bad and kept shut with a clamp. For a while I was putting it (the whole bag) in a plastic garbage bag, then started to read that it might not be a good thing to do. It was also suggested that if you used a plastic container, to get one that is made for food.

what do you want to keep it in? I am not sure you how long you store your food, but a few weeks in the bag doesn't seem out of line to me. I had to use the plastic container because (primarily) my latest dog would help himself to dinner by ripping and/or dumping the bag on the floor and biting off the clamp (he's a pig when it comes to food).
Dog food has to stay in the kitchen around here because there is no place else to store it (we live in a townhouse with zero storage).
Maybe ask the food/pet place to let you have a spare free container (sometimes they only have 2 or 3 left and want the floor space) or buy another rubbermaid tub - it doesn't have to be the dog food specific type. My dog trainer uses a roughtote comtainer (name?) like you store stuff in the garage since it is easier for her.
If all else fails, keep using the bag/clamp thing. I assume you have no 'sniffage' or food break ins like we did[]

You should never use a garage type plastic for dog food storage, you need to use human grade plastic and I can't remember details, but something in less than food grade plastic can leach into the food.  I keep the innova in it's original bag inside a human grade plastic bin.....but, my 33 lb bag lasts all of a week.

I keep my opened dog and cat food inside their own airtight lastic storage bins which were made for storing pet food.  I figure there's no going wrong that way lmao...

Just look for the newest/longest freshness date you can find.

The freshness date means nothing once you open the bag.  All the freshness date deals with is how long the food can be kept UNOPENED before you use it. Once you open it, the date could be next month or next year. It doesn't make any difference once you've let the air get to it. It's best once opened to put in an airtight container.  Once I open mine I pour it directly into a clear plastic tote w/a locking lid and throw a scoop inside. It's much easier to work from than a bag.  Frankly unless your dogs go through alot of food in a short time... it's a better idea to buy smaller bags and only open them as you use them. That's why Timberwolf offers cases of  4lb bags. I use those instead of a 33# bag , #1 because I rotate the formulas and #2 because it ensures me that I'm always using fresh food.

I transfer the food to a 40 lb. container after I open the bag.  I used to keep it in the bag but the ants would always find a way around the plastic I wrapped the bag in!   [:@]

I had a rolling pet food bin that I got at Target, with 20 pounds of Cat Chow, for $8. I gave the Cat Chow to the shelter, and used the bin for Emma's food. Then, I couldn't give her that food, so I gave it, and the bin, to my cousin, who was feeding her dog canned Pedigree. The dog turned it's snotty nose up (I don't particularly care for the dog, but that's a different story) at the Solid Gold, and I think the whole thing got tossed. Then, later on, I started using Natural Balance. I got the 15 pound bags, and they lasted about 2 months. Then I got Teenie and they lasted a month. They still smelled pretty fresh after I got Teenie. Before I got Teenie, I was about to start getting the 10 pound bags, b/c they started not smelling as good towards the end. Now, I don't feed dog food. I think I'd stick with what size lasts less than 6 weeks, or store it in a plastic bin. That was WAY too complicated. I think it's time to go back to bed[sm=crazy.gif]

I put the original bag in a plastic *food* container.I also transfer a weeks worth of food into another small container so i'm not opening the original bag of food,letting air get in twice a day.So the bulk of the food is only exposed to air once a week.

Up until recently i was storing it in the fridge in a glass jar(the recommended method of storage),but i had to reheat the kibble at each feeding because it wasnt as smelly AND my dogs wont eat cold food straight from the fridge,cant say i blame them [:'(] So now i store the lot in the pantry!

Isn't it reccomended that you pour warm water over the food before each feeding, anyways? I think that's what BowChow says.... My dogs always liked it if I poured water from my teapot over their food on cold days, and wait until it's just warm to feed it to them. I still do that with their fresh food, sometimes. 

I need to drag one of my good plastic boxes in from the barn, where most of them went when I moved. Sofie's food is salmon-based and the bag is very good, one of those heavy-duty plastic/foil freshness bags and right now I'm keeping it closed with packaging tape. For freshness, yes, but also because it has a very salmony smell! Not exactly the smell I want perfuming my incredibly small, non-ventilated basement apartment....phew! (It's not stinky fish, it's just salmon, there's a difference, heh.)

I guess we're pretty safe with the food not going bad, getting stale.  33 lbs last a week, and that's only feeding it for breakfast!!

I read somewhere, I think on Innova's site, that it is best to keep the food in the original bag in a dry, cool place.  I keep it in the bag, but if I had a big plastic tub, I would stick the whole bag in the tub as someone mentioned.  I wouldn't pour it out.
