Im so tired of Exclusive!

    Im so tired of Exclusive!

I am to the point that I am wondering: WHY did I switch her over? Someone told me 'If it aint broke, dont fix it' and it wasnt broke, but by trying to fix something that didnt need fixing I broke it. Makes sense??

I joined i-dog and became more aware on my dogs nutritional needs and decided to switch from Beneful to Exclusive (best thing around me). Well with that yuck Crying food I never had a problem. But I get her on Exclusive and she has been having diarrea for 4 days now, and today she soiled her crate for the 2nd time!!

and this is a 5 1/2 month old pup who 3 weeks ago spent the greater part of her day in her kennel because of a bad rainstorm and she did not poop or pee once! This is a pup that goes in her crate at 10pm and if I overslept till 10 or 11 she is fine. So I know those times she has messedin her crate its because she is feeling bad.

Shes eating WAY less, about 1/4 a cup, maybe less once a day. I  dont know what to do, I am really to the point where I dont even want to feed her this food anymore, I was trying to do her right but shes so miserable right now!!

Put her back on what she was eating previously! I did the same thing after joining this board.  I switched my girl to Innova Evo and she got dog bloat, had an awful time with her, she is straightened out now.  I'm still trying the Innova, but feeding her much less of it.  But somehow, wish I'd stayed with what I was already feeding her.

Please don't put her back on Beneful. Purina One or Purian Pro Plan should be available at the same places as Beneful and are loads better.

I was actually thinking of Pro Plan, Eukanuba was my choice of food with our Shih Tzu but I am not going to support animal testing. Im just afraid that if she goes on a different food it will be the same thing and I feel so bad for her.

yep ive seen the ingredients before, but what if i switch to pro plan or purina one and she gets diarrea again?

i cant believe i bought such an over priced better quality food and shes doing so bad on it!

Are you sure this isn't related to the ground beef that you gave her? If I remember correctly it was raw- in that case it could be e-coli or some other bacteria. If the beef was cooked it could have been too greasy...

Which Exclusive formula have you been feeding her?

I made the mistake of trying to put Buck on "better food" than purina several years ago and he throw it up every time.  Back to Purina and no problems at all.  The only other food has been on since that time is Science Diet k/d for his kidney infection and we had no problem with it either. My dad's setters and pointers  all lived long healthy lives on purina and all my previous dogs did also.  I don't even know why i decided to try a "better" food.  But no more.  They will stay on Purina the rest of their lives unless my vet has to put them on one of prescription dog foods for some reason.  To me a "better food" is not better if it gives the dogs runny poops, makes them throw up, they do not want to eat it, etc.

Did you try putting her on a bland diet of boiled chicken or boiled hamburger and rice? That usually helps with diarrhea; she should be on it until her stools are better and then you can gradually replace it with her regular food. Vets have prescription diets for diarrhea too. Definitely stop giving her the Exclusive until she's better; did you mix it with her other food and take a week to switch over to the Exclusive or did you switch cold turkey? If you didn't give her system some time to adjust to the change in foods that can cause diarrhea.

How long had he been on the Purina when you switched?

He is 11 1/2 now and this was about 7 years ago, so i guess he had been on it about 4 1/2 years.  He was on Purina puppy chow when I got him, and since my Irish Setter and other golden were on Purina, I didn't change him to a another puppy food.  Then he went to the Purina.  I lost my irish Setter at age 12 1/2 to bone cancer, and my other golden I had at the time to a sudden and unexpected heart attack at age 5.  Until his death we had no idea he had a heart problem.  It had never been detected by the original vet, nor the one we have now that came here about 10 years ago, and had been Scooters' vet for 3 years.

For the life of me i can't remember what the brand of food was that I tried Buck on, but after 4 days of throwing up monring and night, I tossed it and went back to Purina, which he had never thrown up, and hasn't since.

Lizzie is on a diet as of this morning. Shes already sniffing around for food as its her meal time but im going to hold it off so I can give her some chicken and rice. I know to just boil the chicken but can I boil the rice along with the chicken?

I think it's intersting how people will try one higher quality food, have it not work, and then proclaim that they are all over-priced crap.

We had Sally on Burns for a while.  Good food, just not for her.  The protein was too low (18.5%) and she lost muscle and had a horrific coat.  Instead of freaking out about this horrible over-priced food (BTW-I know someone else with a young male pit doing awesome on it), I tried Solid Gold Wolf King-and she did awesome.  After that I put her on Nature's Variety, and she has done incredible on this food.  Just because a dog react badly to ONE does not mean they will react badly to ALL.

You can also try some canned pumpkin to firm up the stools along with the chicken and rice.
Not pie fill spice pumpkin just 100 % canned pumpkin.

It was more than likely just the change in foods the caused the upset tummy. Mine used to do that when I changed foods, now they tolerate change much better, but I also add pumpkin.

Call your vet for dose, I am not a vet nor do I play one on tv, but you can give lomotil, but as I said call your vet for advice.

The first time I canged foods we had 4 or 5 days of bad diarrhea the vet gave us lomotil and flagyl and it cleared up by the 2cnd dose.

Hope your pup feels better soon.

Maybe you misunderstood me. I dont mean to say that high quality food is crap, I would love to feed Natural Balance or Canidae but cant. But Ezclusive and Royal Canin are overpriced (at least IMO) for the quality of the food. A few steps above Purina One, Pedigree Eukanuba but definately way below Canidae, Wellness, Innova, etc.

I dont believe i implied that these foods were crap because Lizzie wasnt doing well
