Turkey Necks?

    Turkey Necks?

Hi I haven't been on the forums in a really long time. It gets really hectic when classes start. So I'm cooking Thanksgiving for my family and I have a couple of turkey necks. I know I can give it to Tyson raw but is it consumable? I searched for older threads and one of them mentioned it passing through? And I probably shouldn't give him a whole neck right? These sound like silly questions

Turkey necks make me nervous.  I give my crew chicken necks, but turkey necks seem way too big for my comfort.  I could be wrong, they might be absolutely fine, but I'm a wuss about taking chances.

My yorkie devours them (yes...the giant turkey necks) and does fine.

Really? I'm the opposite. I'd NEVER give a large dog chicken necks, they're way to small. Bailey would swallow the whole thing in one gulp without even chewing it.

Bailey has already had several turkey necks in the past week, and he has two more with his name on it for tomarrow. They're nice and big so he won't gulp it, he loves them. I've been feeding him them for years, he has never had an issue with them.

Pirate and Wendy love them some turkey necks! If he's not used to raw I don't think I'd give him the whole thing, but if Pirate can handle it I think Tyson can :)

My guys get them all the time (about once a week).  I usually freeze them & give them frozen, which takes them a long time to eat and really helps clean their teeth.

Today's turkey had a nice long neck I was able to crack in half.  They've already eaten it and are very happy, lol.

Thanks everyone! I guess I'll crack it in half since he's never had one before. he eats the bone and everything?

Yup, Bailey eats the entire thing, bone and all, w/ no problems.

Yup! Even my littles can eat a turkey neck. We don't get them often, because Jewel can't have a lot of minerals and that's quite a bit of bone for a 14 lb dogBig Smile Just watch him with it, especially if he is a gulper. You may have to hold one end and encourage him to chew.

I'll split up all the giblets that come within the turkey and offer them to the dogs.  Buddy inhales everything, so he gets the liver or the gizzard.  Heidi savors everything, loves to take her sweet time eating treats such as turkey necks.  So, I don't mind giving her the neck.  I'll still supervise because I don't feel comfortable not watching her eat...not only because of the choke potential, but because sometimes they can get guardy.  But, yeah...they love'em.

I was wondering about them myself...... are they pretty messy?? Any messier than RMB??

Yesterday was actually the first time Grim had a meal that had bone in it and it was half a turkey neck, we were doing natures variety raw before.

I had my fiance cut it in half and started by holding it for him, he chewed and gnawed for about 3-4 minutes then I put him in his plastic carrier and supervised the rest of the meal. Took him about 20 minutes to eat the whole thing but my two adult boys take less than 5 mins and they are 18 and 15 lbs.

Today he had poops that were firm and the yellowish/white you get when feeding bone. i wouldnt give him a turkey neck everyday just b/c the meat bone ratio isnt balanced enough for me at his young age especially but it was turkey day and he enjoyed it.

As it being messy, chicken backs and cornish hens are messier than turkey necks when my dogs eat them. seems like they stay together pretty well so not much gooky stuff.

My ferret had a turkey neck last night (only half, the whole turkey neck was bigger than he is LOL) and he ate the entire thing, including bones.

Less messy, IMO. It's just like feeding a chicken leg or wing.

Maze gets turkey necks usually twice a week and Sandy gets chicken necks.  They eat the entire thing, bones and all with no issues. I had to watch Maze in the beginning because she would gulp her food but now she chews with no issue.

I was minding a friend's staffy over Christmas last year and she supplied me with a bag of turkey necks to feed him one per day. She said "just give them to him frozen". At the time I thought it seemed a bit lazy and a bit mean. But I see now that quite a few people feed them to their dogs frozen and that there is benefit in doing so.

I know another staffy that gets chicken wings for breakfast and my toy poodles get chicken wings every other day too.
