Bear meat?

    Bear meat?

OK -- so who's fed it to their dogs?

I have some great friends who are active hunters, they recently got a large black bear... and have a ton of meat they are going to give me a bunch (as we both feed raw).   I have spoken to a few people about this, one person fed a lot of bear meat and (coincidentally, maybe?) their Weim lived to 17yrs old (which is amazing for the breed).  Some have warned of trichninosis.  Having done some research into this, it sounds like you can kill some of it by freezing.  Others not so much, but it's predominantly a problem in humans and it sonds like even domestic animals usually don't have much of a problem with it.

I'm prepared to freeze it, and it's already been frozen for quite some time, in my storage freezer... but, I've fed a lot of pork and ((knocks on wood)) so far so good. BUT these were obviously farm raised pigs, where as this was very much a wild bear living in the wilds of the Northwest.

I'd love to hear your experience with bear and/or trichinosis (both bad and good!)

    Thanks!!

You can find out from your local fish and wildlife folks whether trich is a problem in game in your area. If they say it might be, a week below zero degrees will kill everything. Domestic pork does noT contain trich in the US anymore. Have fun with the noms!

I had it fed it to me, once. Ugh. A friend of FH's dad made it into a meatloaf and it was HORRIBLE. I guess the doggies might like it, though :)

Thanks Becca, I appreciate your help!  I know Logan will think this is absolutely *wonderful* .... if he knew where it was, I think he'd pack a bag and head out w/o me :) LOL  I'll look into it, but will probably hard freeze it just to be safe.

LOL HAHAHAHA Yeah!  They smoked some and then had some made into sausages for themselves and once I expressed some interest in trying it, for me, I figure I have to try if just for the sake of trying bear!.... I'm a little worried. I'm sure I'll have some sort of opinion pretty quick! But, I don't think you're alone in your distaste for it!! Stick out tongue

I'm excited to have some... I'm loving the fact that it's truly organic and wild.  Very, very cool!!

Meat is meat, I think it would be just fine! Smile

I can't WAIT until we get a farm and start hunting; Around here meat is NOT cheap, and I would go back to feeding raw if I could. For two dogs it was costing me on average $400-600 a month to feed raw. Now I just supplement with it because I can't afford that. If I had someone offer me bear meat, I'd TAKE IT! Wink Not to mention I loooove bear jerky....

I don't like bear because it seems like the higher in the food chain you go the less the meat is meant to be eaten and has less good stuff in it. I have a few relatives who are hunters so I tried it once but I don't think it's that great. A Dr. friend of mine said that when he was cooking it, the texture reminded him so much of human flesh that he couldn't finish grilling it.

Not sure I know anything about feeding it to your dogs, though.

I'm going to say something that might sound weird to some of you, but if the bear was originally killed as a trophy, and not to feed or clothe anyone and without great respect for the bear's sacrifice, it's really, really bad medicine.  So, I guess my answer is, it depends.

     I'm with Anne.

    Agreed with Anne.

Where did I say that?! Good grief, how offensive Anne.  As I said above, the bear will be made into sausages, jerky and smoked, etc..... pretty obvious to me that it's for food.  Didn't realize I needed to spell every detail out and that I'd be on trial posting a single question. From what I understand pretty much all parts of the bear are being used.  Now, if you want to discuss the merits of hunting for food vs. for trophy, I'll ask you start a new topic.

Jordan, bear meat is meat and I'm grateful to have it for my dogs, even if I don't care for it myself..... but, we shall see I'll definitely be trying some!  I'm very much looking forward to it.  I hear the jerky and sausage is awesome!

Lani I'd feed it in a heartbeat to B

I had bear once as a kid - a bit gamey LOL

I'd feed it in a heartbeat.  Trophy or not.

Free meat of any kind is ALWAYS accepted at my house.

    Same here.

I have similar feelings towards hunting, I don't like an animal to be killed simply for a trophy. Even if the bear was killed as a trophy, if I was offered the meat, I would take it in a heartbeat. For one, its free meat (which is always a great thing for a raw feeder) and two, it would be using part of the animal instead of it going to waste.

My statement was not directed at ANYONE, just a response to whether or not *I* would feed bear meat to *my* dogs if it was offered to *me.*  I don't know what religious beliefs you hold, but to call mine offensive is the height of insult.  Others are free to follow whatever beliefs they want, and to feed their dogs however they want, and I never said otherwise, only that I prefer to feed my dogs from sources that have  been respectful of the animal in question.  It's one thing if I don't know, but if I do, I can choose to avoid or decide to partake, which is why I said "it depends."

.... so, do you think that they hold great reverance for the cows and chickens they slaughter at slaughter houses?

I feel that you can hold whatever opinion you like. But, I took your statement very different from how you seem to have intended it and was truly offended.

Personally, I feel that this bear was appreciated much, much more than 100% of the chicken and beef you will find at your local grocery chain. I'm very, very appreciative to be getting some meat for myself and my dogs and know that the hunter and his family are very appreciative as well.

Thanks to those you gave your opinion.... I'm glad to know most don't seem to think bear meat and trichinosis would be too much of a concern for you.  And like you.... free meat is ALWAYS welcome in my home. I truly appreciate having it.  :)
