Gassy Dog-Food help?

    Gassy Dog-Food help?

Hey guys, so Simba is rather gassy. Maybe not as much as some other dogs but he sure as heck 'cuts the cheese' a lot more than my last dog. I know some dogs are just gassy and I figure half of it may be his diet. I try to keep him away from things like cheese, carrots...I know bones can cause gas because of them inhaling the air when chewing on them but I figure a change in food might be a good idea. So anyone who has a gassy dog, are there any foods out there that help lessen it? I'm tired of getting farted in the face, ugh. Haha! Any other suggestions are good as well. :) Like other things to cut down on.

I would start by adding yogurt!

Agreed.  Just be sure that it's one with live, active cultures.  Plain is best.

    What are you feeding him?

    • Gold Top Dog

Okay, I'll try that. How much should I give to him? He's currently on Science Diet Puppy Formula(obviously :P). He gets 1 1/2 cups twice a day.

How much does Simba weigh now?

For what you are paying for SD you can get a really GOOD food.  SD is not a good food.

He's currently 46 pounds I would guess, since he was 45 last week when he went to the vet.

Oh trust me, I know. But my mom is being so darn stubborn about it. :| "This is what the vet suggested." YEAH! SUGGESTED! Ugh. I was thinking about getting Solid Gold but what would you guys suggest?

Does your mom enjoy the smells emanating from Simba's behind?  Wink  Let her know all that corn in SD is most likely the cause of the gas, and that for the same amount of money, you could switch him to a better food (actually you would end up feeding less of a better quality food, so the bag will last longer than the SD, stretching out that money further).  My boys weigh more than Simba, and are very active, and yet I don't have to feed as much in quantity as you are feeding Simba, because the nutrients in Orijen are more concentrated (no filler garbage that's in SD).

With these ingredients I am not surprised , Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal. This means your dog is getting 2/3 corn as a diet. Do you know what a by product is. "Chicken by-products include head, feet, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, stomach, bones, blood, intestines, and any other part of the carcass not fit for human consumption,. I would start by finding a food that had some real food in it and that may correct the problem.

She usually doesn't have to deal with it. <_< Lucky and yeah I will. HOPEFULLY she'll listen to reason, ugh. 1 1/2 cups seems a bit much to me too. o.o

    Bleck. Totally will be.

I am feeding Finn, who is on Solid Gold, about 3/4 of a cup 2x a day and he is about 30 pounds.  Max who is 50 pounds (and a senior) gets a cup 2x a day.  You would definitely feed less of a better food.  Does your mom know that??  I know how hard it can be to persuade people that better quality=less food given.

Simba is still a growing puppy though.

    • Gold Top Dog

That is true.  How old is he now?  7 months?

Pass these benefits along to mom.

Higher kcals in better foods, so you feed less

Ingredients that are more easily digestible=more food USED by the body and less passing out the other end, ie: quicker and easier poop patrol

Better food=fewer parasites.  I have NO links to prove this, however, I know from my experience having gone from Purina large breed puppy to Innova and other high quality foods, we have not had fleas in YEARS.  And I don't use frontline or anything else.  We simply don't have fleas.  And that includes living in sandy areas of MI, GA and Florida.

Better food typically = fewer vet trips for illness, or allergy related issues.  I know a couple whose lab had constant skin and ear issues.  The dog LIVED on prednizone and his vet was ready to send him downstate for an ear ablation.  My youngest son was working as a rep for Blue Buffalo and convinced them to try Blue.  Within a matter of weeks, skin and ears were drastically improved and this boy did NOT need the ablation.

There are any number of really good quality foods out there.  SD is not one of them.  Solid Gold is.  You want a food with a named meat or meat meal source as the FIRST ingredient. What you do not want is something generic like "poultry".....what specific poultry??  Chicken, turkey, duck, SPARROW???  Tell me exactly what I'm feeding please.  I look for food with no corn, wheat or soy, no animal byproducts, no grain fragments and NO grain gluttens.

A really good site for mom to visit would be the dog food project site and I'm sure that someone here has that link.
