    Should Kibble be Soaked?

I was wondering about this from Dyan's thread.  SHOULD I be soaking my dogs' kibble?  Are there benefits or downsides or is it just a personal preference?

I always have, because Emma never drank enough. Also, my dogs inhale their food, and if it's at least damp, they don't choke on it as much. If I fed Em dry kibble (from a treat ball or something) I'd also give her a spoonful of canned mixed with water, to get fluids in.

I add water because my dogs all eat too fast otherwise but I don't soak it.  I don't know why it would be better soaked unless a dog weren't drinking enough water, as Jennie mentioned.

I think I only soaked Apollo's kibble a few times when he was going through a picky phase (thanks, Mom...). Otherwise, no, I never soak food. My dogs don't have issues with getting enough water in or eating too quickly.

I've heard some people soak it to make it expand before the dog eats it.  But, there are so many schools of thought about what causes bloat and what doesn't.  I don't know what to think.

It would be interesting to see if it slows Jack down.  Sally is fine but Jack completely INHALES his food, sometimes chokes on it, and always is burping afterward....

Have you heard of the Break-Fast Bowl? It's helped lots of my clients dogs (mainly the Labs, lol) slow down eating.

Mine always get it caught in their throats, if it's dry. Sometimes, it's soaked, sometimes, it's just coated in canned or dampened, but it's never dry.

Thank God!  I was thinking about this since the other thread.  I was worried you'd all say "absolutely NOT" to wet kibble.  I always mix our kibble with water and let it sit so it softens up.  I don't know why but if it's dry they just don't want it.  Spoiled/picky?  Dunno, but they all chow it down like it's their last meal when it's soft!

I think that it's a personal preference.  There are so many conflicting studies about what may cause bloat that you really don't know what's right or wrong.

I float Brutus & Chyna's kibble.  Chyna doesn't drink enough, & Brutus chokes on his kibble, so it works well for both of them.

Kord use to inhale his food. I would start with the dish that makes them slow down or you could do what I did with Kords.

I literally poured it on the floor and let it scatter around, he had to hunt down his food when he was little. And water was never an issue, he was always a recreational drinker.

I used to soak Ari's kibble when she was younger. Now, occasionally I will throw water on top and "float it" Ari tends to not drink water in the morning and our house is incredibly dry this time of the year. She's left alone in a kennel (no water until I can get a device that secures water to the crate). Ari also likes it when there's water on her kibble. She doesn't inhale her food, so I just do it to get some water into her, particularly in the mornings.

I've never soaked kibble, but I never had a real reason to either.

If I put water on Aesop's kibble he'd look at it about the same way I would if you poured milk over my crackersStick out tongue  But then he is not a normal eater

LOL, I think I know the look!
