    Another cat food question

I was talking with my mom about the food she feeds her cat and she wanted my help in choosing a better food for her.  Am I looking for the same types of things in cat food as I would in dog food (no by products, etc...)?  I assume the commercial brands aren't any good as in dog food.  I was thinking of having her try Blue Buffalo, although I know that will be pricey for her.  Right now I believe she is feeding Meow Mix and every so often some wet food.

Any suggestions?  What am I looking for on the ingredient list?

    Thanks!

You are basically looking for the same things you'd like for in dog food.

That's a huge leap from Meow Mix to Blue so be sure that she transitions very slowly.

I feed my cats the Wilderness and a 12 lb bag (@$30) last a good 7 or 8 weeks for 3 cats.  They get 1/4 C morning and evening and if they haven't really eaten their morning, they get less added for dinner.  I also split one can of wet between them over TWO mornings.

I don't think I'd recommend going from MM right to Wilderness, but the salmon is one my cats really liked.

So, how long should the transition take?  A month?  Maybe work a few kibble pieces in per day and then up it every few days?

We switched my guys off purina cat chow, to BB rather quickly - but they all did fine. I wanted to do it slower, but we ran out of chow sooner than I expected.

Cats need few, if any, grains. Cats also do not, usually, drink enough water, so canned is really good for them. If she's able - I would do a strictly canned diet. I can't with my cuys (6 to feed, plus 1/2 don't even like the canned!).

My kitties like the salmon flavor - but I've got the turkey on right now (on sale!!). they don't seem to dislike any of the flavors though. I did notice when I mixed the two foods together, they tried to pick around the BB to eat the crap chow. Confused go figure... silly cats don't know what's good for them!

But - seriously, my cats look AMAZING on the BB. They've always looked GOOD - but I notice a huge differance now with the BB. They are shiney, don't shed as much - and I am convinced my allergies are better, I don't even have to take my meds unless I'm going to work - which is wonderful in my book!

I feed Orijen and canned. It is spendy, but for 1 cat its worth it.
