too much?

    too much?

Cadie has proven to not be a morning eater... she will not touch her kibble at all during the AM. I did tough love the first few mornings, but this morning I left it in her crate with her all day - and she didn't touch it. Now - she'll eat her breakfast at night - after our park or trip to the park. Is 2 cups of puppy food (Blue Buffalo) too much for her to eat at once? She's skinny, and needs two meals - and it's not always an option to feed it in portions at night - which I've been doing....1 cup here, another in a hour or so.

Casey's not a morning eater either - but he only eats 3/4 a cup a day - so I'm not worried about him.

She's 25lbs now, about 6-7 months old. I do NOT want to add anything to her food - I don't want to create a picky eater!

I might continue to offer maybe 1/2 cup in the am just in case it's a side effect of her adjusting to a new house, but otherwise I don't think there's much you can do at this point.  I know a number of dogs who will stop eating in the daytime when the temps start rising, so maybe she's part of that group?

eta: Laddy is 27.4lbs and about 6mo too and is getting 3 cups of food per day - she may need even more food than the 2 cups to put on weight at this stage.  It's amazing how many calories growth takes up!

I know Casey likes to eat after he's DONE something...like a walk, or playing in the yard - which he does not do in the AM because he is just not a moning dog!

Cadie doesn't seem to be much of a morning dog either - would much rather sleep when it's time to get up!

I guess I'll just keep leaving her breakfast in the crate... I don't want her to get used to having food down all the time - but if it's in the crate maybe we'll be ok there.

I don't want to give her too much - because I have no clue what she was eating in GA before I pulled her...I'm tryin to aviod the diarrhea situation - and so far, so good! She's not overly skinny - just not a plump as I'd like her, but that will come as we build more muscle too. She ate her 2 cups this evening with no problem....weirdo Confused What kind of food are you feeing Laddy? The bag of BB says 2-3 cups a day for a 5-7 month old dog topping out between 20-50 lbs.... so maybe I should up it a bit. hmm....

Don't go by the bag - a dog that's been undercondition for a while kind of gets used to starving, sometimes. That's not actually true - what is going on is their bodies are metabolizing muscle and that makes them a bit sickish. For a little while, what I actually do is prepare bland meals - white rice boiled to death, with chicken or beef - snacks of just plain white bread (Wonder bread is awesome) through the day - maybe a week or so. Gradually add things as stomach conditioners like yogurt (the good kind from the health food store - full fat with the cream on top), boiled apples mashed up, until she's wolfing down her food. At this point I usually add a couple tablespoons of tripe because such dogs here will be on tripe until they are fully back on line (I like Tripett - I can't get hubby to handle raw tripe). Then gradually start mixing in her kibble. You should be able to get her eating everything she needs to start increasing condition within a week to two weeks. If you leave the tripe in and she's still leaving food, and not gaining weight, she needs to see a vet! Good luck!

oh no - she's not acting sick at all! VERY energetic, good poops - I just didn't want to give her TOO much food and cause diarrhea (cause we all know that's no fun to clean up!) She ate her breakfast this morning... so maybe she was just adjusting - maybe her previous foster just fed her in the PM? I'm leaning more towards that. She was eating all her food - just waited until dark to eat. Confused
