Nikon show brag!

    Nikon show brag!

We just got back from an AKC show.  This is the 4th show for Nikon (2 UKC, 1 AKC and now this another AKC).  At every show there is always this same American line dog that is his age.  Sometimes others here or there, but always this other dog has been in his class.  Nikon beat him his first show which wasn't too surprising since it was UKC but in the AKC ring we mainly go for practice and socialization, don't feel we have a chance against the American line dogs (and usually don't).  Today Nikon beat him fair and square in the AKC ring!  I heard the judge explaining to the other owner why she got second (I think her dog is meant to be primarily a show dog so she's very interested in the judges opinions) and the judge said on the down and back her dog was loose and all over the place but Nikon was very clean considering their age.  He also gaited well now that I've figured out how face to pace my steps.  I was totally shocked to win, we just assumed the competition is between the American dogs and especially this dog, people seem to like him and he's quite a bit larger and more mature looking than Nikon at this age.  Nikon's sister did good too and another dog from our breeder, the judge complemented their solid temperaments (many dogs were shying away from the judges and pulling backwards into their leads).  Sadly, no pics since my camera didn't have a memory card in it, duh!

Woo hoo!  Go Nikon!  You showed em all what a do is SUPPOSED to look like, right? Smile

That's fantastic!  Sounds like this judge had no agenda other than picking the nicest dog in the ring!  It's good IMO that she shared her opinions and mentioned the nice temperaments.  Yeah, Nikon!

She was a very nice judge and was way more helpful than the strange one we had last time.  If the stack was bad or the dogs were pacing instead of gaiting she would have us do it again rather than simply pass on the dog.  We went around 3-4 times and went down and back twice.  I also appreciated that she touched Nikon all over and checked his bite herself.  She paid way more attention to their movement than the stacks which was in our favor.  Nikon is fidgety when stacking but is clean gaiting, not all loose and wabbly like many GSDs his age.  We're starting handling class in March but I enjoy doing these shows even without class yet because even with handling advice, it seems each judge wants something different and might totally contradict another judge.

And the movement is what counts, I mean it's all fine and dandy if the dog looks good standing still, but lets see him move around. I think it's so smart of you to take every opportunity to get Nikon out there and doing stuff, he will be such a well rounded dog by the time he is two and all his ribbons and accomplishments will be the icing on the cake. He looks so incredibly cute in his picture and the dog he is going to be is becoming more and more apparent. I'm hopelessly in love with him. :)
