    News on Orijen....

Anyone heard of the cat food recalls in Australia due to their government requiring irradiation on all foods that enter the country. I guess this caused 5 cats to become ill due to over irradiation of Orijen cat foods for a short duration. They have now stopped all Orijen shipments to Australia for the time being for dogs and cats, due to fear of anymore cats becoming ill.

Studies were done proving it wasn't the actual food that caused the illnesses, but the protocals in which the food enters the country caused chemical reactions within the food and made the cats ill.

Anyone know if the USA requires irradiation (treated with radiation) of foods from Canada?....meaning, are our american dogs/cats at risk of this too?  I feel horrible for Orijen cause they got the bad wrap, but I guess they sent samples of the same batch before irradiation and after irradiation to a couple different universities and discovered it was the Australian's protocal that caused the problem.

I feel terrible for the owners in Australia, as appearantly every dog/cat food that comes through must be treated with radiation.

I'm not sure who to believe in that situation---I kinda wonder if maybe shipping the food so far causes problems (like extreme heat, etc).  I'm not sure about that radiation TBH.

This information was posted in the Kitty Corner part of the forum before Thanksgiving. I agree with Jana; it's not too likely that the irradiation process caused this.

Hmmm...so is Champion pet foods releasing false information/test results? I guess the universities results showed that the food had been exposed to radiation.

I sent them an e-mail in request for further information, as I don't feed their cat foods, but I do have relatives feeding their dog foods...I don't see how neurological symptoms in these cats could be due to the food just being shipped long distances....something doesn't sound right. Food may go bad, and pets may get sick, but why would it mess with the nervous system?

There are several neuro-tropic bacteria that can grow on rancid food.  Some species are more susceptible than others.

I mean, if they released results showing that they had been exposed to radiation, my question is why? I don't see the point or why they would they have tested the food for radiation, and how would that even happen?

Pappillion...it is the Australian government that REQUIRES all outsourced food to be treated with radiation, thus the reason it would have been exposed to radiation.
