RMBs?

    RMBs?

Can someone refresh my memory on which bones are OK to feed raw?

Are chicken backs and necks OK?  What else do folks normally feed for RMBs?

I was thinking of giving some to Sammy since if I feed homecooked he doesn't get as much of a chance to exercise those jaw muscles!  Not to mention the cheap source of calcium ;)

All chicken bones are fine. Pork bones are good. Pork neckbones are fantastic, if you can get them not to cut them up. Usually, if they're cut up, they have a sharp edge. Lamb bones are good. Larger dogs can usually eat beef bones.

Basically, anything that's small enough to consume, and not small enough to choke on.

Thanks!  Sammy tends to chew well so I'll give it a go tomorrow and just keep an eye on him.... I think I will be feeding this outside ;)

The meat dept at my grocery store doesnt seem to do anything "in store" -- so things like this come in pre packaged and frozen.  I tried asking at 3 stores for meat "ends" or something that would be good for the dog but maybe a wee bit cheaper -- and not one processes anything at the store.  go figure.  So, I'm at their mercy.  But, they have chicken backs and necks for 69 cents a lb occassionally :)  I've not been very successful in my hunt for a local butcher... sigh.

What about pigs feet?  Those were fairly cheap but I couldn't imagine there being much good on there other than chewing pleasure....

Pig feet STINK! As far as I know, they're mostly bone. I've only bought them once. It kind of grossed me out (and I feed brain, go figure!).

Try looking for an ethnic market - Asian, Hispanic, etc.  Many times they stock fun stuff and they usually have on site butchers that will be happy to help you with what you need.  Pictures help communicate though.  :)

Oooh good idea!  I work with.... let's see.... 5 chinese/taiwan folks directly, who can speak both cantonese and mandarin, I'm sure I could get help with asian places.  Heck, some folks I work with cook and eat some weird things so that might be a great idea!  I also know at least three people fluent in spanish although I'm not sure they frequent places of interest.  But, at least I can have translators!

So the frozen pig feet I bought him didn't stink, at least that I could tell.  But, it was a lot of bone and it was a bit more crunching and needing of a lot of jaw strength that I like, but he didn't seem to mind in the least!  Where, might I ask, does one get brain?  These asian markets that were mentioned?

I get it at Food Lion. It's in the freezer section, near the liver and chitterlings. I hear that it's good in scrambled eggs, LOL. It's VERY high in fat (DHA!) and B12. It's like... 10% fat, as fed. It's very slimy and disgusting.

Oh! And it comes in a little tub, like chicken livers, except it's pork brains.I think the brand is usually Bryan's....?

Definitely check the Hispanic and Chinese/oriental markets - they have lots of 'interesting' things and I find are cheaper than lots of places.  Brookcove told me about the pig's legs and cow hooves.  Bugsy ate one of the pig legs in record time last week LOL  He mostly gets pork neck bones because he is limited to pork, lamb and beef.  Beef bones are hard to find for me, lamb is pricey so pork it is.

I have a huge chinese market nearby and plenty of hispanic markets and they have lots of interesting things but I have not seen pork brains in little tubs though  Stick out tongue

I so wish I could find brain here.  I could get it when we lived upstate, also at the food lion.  Although, I haven't looked at the Piggly Wiggly - if it were to be anywhere, it would be there!
