    Dry kibble recommendations, please

Ok, so since I got Apollo (March 1, 2007) he's been on Canidae ALS regular formula. I tried Blue Buffalo but he had soft poops and dry skin. So, back to Canidae we went. He eats his food like he's never eaten before- all the time, so I'm not even sure if it's necessary to switch.
Do you all have any recommendations for us?

    He's:
    100-110lbs
    around 5 years old
relatively active (goes for 3-4 walks a day, plus at least one trip to the park a day)
    no allergies
doesn't really like fishy smelling foods (like wellness core ocean)

Mods, feel free to move this. I wasn't sure if it should be in the nutrition or general.

I'd just stay on it if you are happy and he's happy.  The reason there's been a massive tide of people switching is that they changed the formula and the new doesn't agree with a lot of dogs.

Yeah, if the food seems to work well for him... I know many disagree with me, but I'm kind of in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" camp of dog food selection. Stick out tongue

Nothing wrong with trying a new food for kicks and giggles, though, if you feel so inclined. Rascal's on Wellness Core (non-ocean) and does quite well on it. Innova EVO red meat also worked pretty well with him, but it made him gain a surprising amount of weight. But we're not wildly active, so maybe it would work better with you guys. I think those are both a lot more expensive than the Canidae, though. No biggie for me and my 2-pounds-a-month-eating little guy, but for a bigger dog....

I too am with the "if it ain't broke, why fix it" school.

I will say, in my experience with Blue, that I feed a LOT less than I did with Canidae, and often the soft stool is because we overfeed. I also really like Innova.

I know it has been a couple of days, but you might want to try Eagle Pack Holistic Select for Large & Giant Breeds. A great food! My sister's Golden eats it. He is just gorgeous. Good Luck.

When I first switched Honor off of Canidae, she went to Orijen, and I haven't looked back.  Both Honor and Nike are on Orijen, and they have terrific coats and good digestion.  Orijen's adult formula sounds like it would be palatable for Apollo, as it mostly chicken and turkey based.

Definitely stick to the Canidae unless there is another reason you want to switch Wink

If you want to rotate foods for variety, try different formulas of the Canidae brand (they have a Chicken & Rice w/ similar protein, and a Lamb & Rice w/ lower protein).  They are also coming out with three other formulas if you would like to try those too.

But just as everyone already said...if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Big Smile

I'm always happy to recommend PetGuard Lifespan (www.petguard.com).

It is always consistent, in quality, smell, and performance. My dogs do great on it, nice firm poops, beautiful coat and skin, no gas, no tearing issues on the bichons.  It's an ALS formula and all sizes.  THe customer service has always been great for my questions as well.

I am just so surprised that more people don't feed it.  I use the canned and dry.

I can't feed the dry because of Jessie's food allergies, but I feed some of the canned products.

I've never even heard of it before! I'll look for it next time I'm buying food, to see if they even sell it.

A health store in our area carries it, along with Newman's Organics and Castor and Polluck's Organix.

I'm a huge fan of Canine Caviar venison formula. It's hard to find locally. I order it from thehungrypuppy.com
