    Weight loss with grain free?

Charlie has always been a skinny dog.  He is 2 now and the last time he was weighed at the vet he was 60 lbs. (which the vet said to keep him there).  I know the leaner the better but I can't tell you how many times people has said "how old is your puppy" or they think he is a female or they say "Ive never seen a golden that small before.  Anyway, we started him on grain free about 2 mths ago, and I haven't weighed him but he seems like maybe he lost just a little weight.  I give him about 2 2/3 cups of Wellness Core + about a 1/2 can of EVO a day.  He's constantly hungry.  I and just wondering if the can sometimes loose a little weight on grain free food.  I want to keep him lean because of his hips but I don't want to starve him either.

You may want to compare Kcals per cup.My dog actually gained weight on Evo reduced fat when I was trying to reduce her weight.Evo Red Meat has 487 kcals to Wellness Original's 430.

Yes. Grain free foods are good and often used for weight loss. Kind of like the Atkins Diet for dogs, only healthier. Maybe you just want to up the amount of food you're giving him if gets too thin for your liking.

It's fine for a pup to be lean (especially the larger breeds) but two is plenty old enough to start getting some condition on him, so you don't want to see weight loss if he doesn't need it!  Wink

Core is really a low-cal food - check the kcals per kilogram and compare to any of the other foods, both grain free and grain based.  I've forgotten what regular Core is now but I remember it was pretty low.  I fed almost a cup more of it (ie, 30% by volume), compared to Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete, which is not a grain free but rather is a performance formula.  My medium-activity "easy keeper" Border Collie (45 pounds) was getting three whole cups plus some extras, so you can see it's not a very calorie-dense food.

It's a good food though.  If I didn't have six dogs AND I didn't cook for them I'd still be using it.  I do still have some for emergency food for them - it's one of the few "Ben safe" kibbles.  If you want him to gain/maintain, you'll probably want to feed more.

My 16mnth old pup's the same way. He's barely 53# and eats 3+ cups/day of Orijen, he's skin and bones.
