He said EP was DESIGNER food!

Hello, hope everyone is well. I was just shopping at the grocers, and had a bag of Good Life dog biscuits at the checkout aisle. The man behind me picks it up and starts reading the bag. So I say, "I buy those for treats, but feed my dog Eagle Pack Holistic food. He says "Oh, that's a DESIGNER food. It's not even in the top 20!"Surprise So I ask.."what do you feed your dog?" "Eukanuba" he says "it's the BEST dog food you can buy" And I ask.."so my food is junk?" he says"no, it's just not as good as they want you to believe"

So of course this just upset my whole day! I have been feeding my dog inferior food, for almost two years?Huh? He sure looks and acts healthy.

Oh what to do? Please help!

Don't trust this guy's opinion.  I'd feed Eagle Pack over Eukaneuba any day.

    • Gold Top Dog

I would NEVER feed Eukanuba over Eagle Pack.  You're feeding the superior quality food, don't think otherwise.
    .
If you need verification that Eagle Pack has better ingredients, I would check out two websites: dogfoodproject.com, and dogfoodanalysis.com.

And I may be uninformed, but I have no idea which "Top 20" he's speaking of.  Anybody know? Stick out tongue

So my Eagle Pack is just fine? I hate it when people barge into your life and try to interfere. Angry I'm thinking, did I miss something? Didn't I do my research a couple years ago, for like months and months? Ughh! He has me looking up all kinds of stuff, looking for this top 20 list he's talking about. Could not find it. I did find an article from Jan 08' on the top ten global food sales companies. That may or may not mean that food is great either. But, The company that lists Royal Canin is the top selling global pet food co. with 10.71 billion $ in sales. What is everyone here feeding these days? Designer..grumble grumble..ooh that just chaps my..

I say to the guy, "well I will have to do some research" I went with EP when all that recall stuff was going on. He says " you can go down the paper goods aisle right now, and buy a pack of plastic plates made of melanin. Go home, heat your sandwich up on it. The melanin will seep up into the sandwich, and can cause you to have kidney failure right then and there."

That's the part where I should have laughed and said, have a nice day. It seems to me that Eukanuba was one of the ones I was told to avoid when I was doing my research. Though I am getting older, and the old light is getting dimmer...Smile

Maybe he works for Eukanuba, lol.  Or, more realistically, he's one of those people who "knows it all" and feels compelled to share his vast knowledge with every stranger he meets.  Just let it roll off your back...you are feeding a great food and your dog is doing well on it.  You should feel good about the choice you made in food.

Lol, that's definitely where I would have called it a day. Smile

Orijen, although Eagle Pack was on my rotation before I switched to grain free.

    • Gold Top Dog

I tried the Orijen for two months, and to be honest, he didn't really like it as much. So I switched back. I would like to add something else just for variety if it's ok. What else is a great food? Is anyone feeding Life's Abundance?

    • Gold Top Dog

Casey eats Blue Buffalo - and he does really well on it. I also add in a small (very small) amount of EVO 95% meat canned food, mixed with some water. We don't do this every night... some nights he get fish oil, some nights an egg and sometimes it's yogurt. Depends what I have on hand =]

He also gets some veggies, and other assorted table scraps, as treats - we don't do store bought treats here.

Couldn't you just rotate among the three varieties of Eagle Pack Holistic if that's what your dog does well on? Next time you meet someone like this guy, ask them what the first ingredient of the food they use is; chances are it will be a form of corn or some other grain. Then tell then that Eagle Pack is about 40% meat meal; for example the Holistic Duck, which I'm feeding now, is 40% duck meal. I have the complete nutritional analysis (John will be happy to send them to you) of all the Holistic formulas. You can use them to compare to other foods to help you in deciding if another food would be better for your dog.

Thank you all for your input. And thanks for reposting the Dog Food Project and Dog Food Reviews. It makes me want to go back to Orijen. I didn't know so many others were rated higher, and many are now grain free. Maybe we could give it another try. Yes, he is Heartly..the smartest & best pal I have ever had. He is Akita{dad} & Labrador Retriever{mom}. He is so smart, he is amazing sometimes. I tried to put some pics that show his different ages,

from left to right, is approx. 3 mo,6 mo,12 mo, and now,..he will be two in December.Smile

For goodness sakes, how RUDE is that guy to pick up one of your groceries and start inspecting it!!!  I also just love it when people inform others with complete authority that such and such is the "best". There's no such thing and it's just a sign of ignorance/close-mindedness...

So anyway, I think that Eagle Pack is a better food than Eukanuba, but it is my opinion only. I'm sure there are many dogs that do just as well on Eukanuba.

    • Gold Top Dog

For some reason the rest of my post did not show up. Then I edited it just now....it shows up on my edit..but not on my post.

I wanted to add to my post after the ingredient list of Eukanuba: That Chicken as a first ingredient is not as good as chicken meal... because a meat or chicken is up to 70% water.....you are better off with a chicken meal as first ingredient.  Also...I know there is a lot of conversation on this...but the chicken by-product leaves a lot to be desired for me.

EP will start with a meat source meal....which means a lot more meat.

Waterfaller.... why do you care so much about what some random guy in the supermarket thinks, anyway?

Don't automatically believe anyone, whether it's Random Market Guy or the Dog Food Project, without doing some of your own research. And if you're convinced that what you're feeding is a good, healthy food, then have faith in your decision and don't worry just because someone disagrees with you!

I've had lots of success feeding Timberwolf, Innova EVO, and Wellness Core. But Eagle Pack Holistic also looks like an excellent food.
