How to teach Shailer to pull?

I am having second thoughts about doing carting with Shailer. He is now 7yrs old and he is getting up there in age. Is it still liable to teach him to pull a cart? Ofcourse he will be taken to the vet for a full physical to insure that he is able to. I don't know if I am being to paranoid but I sometimes think that his age will not let him enjoy carting or if he really will like it. He doesn't pull so I would need to teach him how to pull. Well he knows how to pull but he won't pull anything other than me lol. So should I continue with him? I am definetly doing carting I already have my cart but it needs fixing.

I've had dogs that were happy to pull a cart well into their senior years, although they all learned the skill as young dogs. What is your goal with carting? If you just want to teach your dog a fun skill, then there's no reason why a sound 7 yr old couldn't learn to pull a cart. The cart itself isn't very heavy, so the cart alone isn't going to put a lot of physical stress on a sound dog. On the other hand, if you want to participate in carting tests, or you want your dog to actually haul loads of stuff for you, then he may or may not be able to do it. Most carting tests don't require that the dog pull all that much of a load. They are not weight pull competitions where the emphasis is on muscle power. Carting tests are much more about skill and precision in maneuvering the cart, and much lass about brawn. If your goal is to have your dog pull loads for you in some practical situation then it depends on what it is you want your dog to haul. Since you already have the cart, you have nothing to lose by teaching him to pull an empty cart, and then you can gradually add weight to it (by gradually I mean a couple pounds at a time, not fifty pound increments). It should be apparent to you when the amount of weight is causing him to struggle a bit, and at that point you back off on the load significantly.

I started Hektor our pulling by getting him used to wearing the harness, then we attached it to a backpack with one book in it (a big book) and using treats and the command pull I had him walk forward and rewarded him often. He was a little scared at first that something was following him so we only went a few steps and then rewarded and gradually went longer distances. I walked next to him and used a leash until he got it down.

We then proceeded to a tire and had him pull that around the yard. He now gets excited at the sight of his pulling harness. I have not hooked him to our wagon yet as I need to fix it first but he pulls tires around the yard now and responds to pull, and gee, and haw and whoa.

Looking back on it I should have used "mush" as the start command.
