tripe - oh my!

My dogs (and I) just experienced tripe for the first time. Tripett in the can. I was prepared for a strong odor, but whew!!! I was on the verge of gagging the whole time. Both dogs were doing backflips for it however, as soon as I opened the can. They scarfed it down in seconds and were looking for more. I had to open the windows and thorougly wash the can and its lid before I threw it away, along with the bowl and the spoon. I think if my husband smelled it he would have thrown me and the dogs out of the house - he can't even bear to be in the same room as a bully stick! I do know that it is super healthy for them though. The place I bought it also gave me samples of freeze-dried tripe (which Zoe is begging for as I'mt typing this), freeze dried beef organ nuggets, and they also sell frozen patties.

You threw it out in the trash can?! When I worked at a kennel, there were two bichons who stayed frequently and ate trippett. As soon as I fed them, I would bag the bowls, spoons, and can in a small baggie and throw it away in our outside trash. WHEW. I hated that stuff!!

haha Yep, it sure is stinky stuff! I find the frozen stuff doesn't smell as bad as the canned stuff. I also feed it outside. No way am I stinking the house up with that stuff!

Molly and Bella both love tripett. I know it stinks but tripe is much worse smelling as I have bought both. They like it so much DH and I just put up with the smell as they only get it occasionally as I have to order it over the internet. We get a case at a time when we order and make it last. So the foul smell once in a while we just live with knowing the dogs are in heaven eating it.

LOL, everyone talked it up like it was the worst thing ever and it didn't bother me too much for some reason? Is that wierd?

I buy the Solid Gold Tripe, and honestly, while it's not necessarily pleasant, I really don't think it's so bad either. Surprise

I feel the same about it; I don't mind the smell. But I always warn people that it stinks. We live next to a cow farm and I find cow stink to be a rather peaceful one. Much preferable to say, smog, which I used to live with!

My daughter and I were in the pet store just last night looking at the Solid Gold canned food. We looked at the Tripe, and I had heard about the smell, so I chickened out and didn't buy it. Stick out tongue

We ended up with good old Lamb instead. Maybe one of these days I'll try the Tripe. I wish they sold it in a smaller can- like a one meal serving size. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to keep in the fridge.

No, Kelly, I don't think that's weird. You are a doctor and have probaby been exposed to human decomp, so what's a little cow intestine? Stick out tongue

Seriously, I got some of the Solid Gold stuff when Shari was alive and I was expecting just the worst smell ever. I didn't find it bad at all. If you could smell the stench left by my male cat Moose when he poops, you'd take the tripe - trust me! Ick!

Solid Gold's tripe comes in 5.5 oz pop top cans. I love them, and used them for dog shows, for a good while. My friend asked me to stop, so now we use Dr Harvey's Power Patties. No smell!

The shop owner also gave me some samples of freeze-dried tripe. Both of my dogs flip for it, and the smell isn't nearly as bad as a canned. The freeze-dried can be used as a treat or a complete meal (tripe on its own has the proper calcium phosphorus ration). You can feed it dry or add water. The freeze-dried is supposedly better than the canned since it is not exposed to the super-high temperatures of canning and therefore the enzymes are still there.
