Excellent post, Houndmusic. Your advice is suitable regardless of what we feed. If a dog takes a turn for the worse, change their food by all means. And a little bit of runs from a food change is managable, compared to losing your beloved pet.
Many foods are changing in response to market pressure. containing more ingredients and volume listings similar to the former "premiums" because the consumer, you and I, are becoming more aware of nutrition for our pets. But, while the companies are changing the formulas to suit the market demand, they may also substitute ingredients if they can squeeze a dollar more out of it. And that's because, more and more, food companies are being bought out by bigger companies and investment management groups. People who don't have a clue about dog food. They just track the "bottom line."
In my approach to feeding, I apply the engineer's rule. If it works, don't fix it. But things are beyond my control. Nutro is now owned by Mars, after having a leveraged buy-out from an investment firm. It used to be a family owned food. None of the local suppliers that I can frequent are carrying the large breed Lamb Meal and Rice. Just the regular. Whereas I and some hunters I know who have Labs for hunting dogs feed large breed formula. But hey, if it wasn't making the projected profit, it could get canceled.
Funny thing is, Shadow will be 5 years old this month and so I am switching him to senior formula, which comes in a large breed formula. But I have no specific brand loyalty. If the food didn't or doesn't work, I will change it in a heartbeat.
But it is an interesting dichotomy. While the foods are reflecting the market demand for premium style and exotic meats, it is also morphing due to the increasing infiltration by big business not previously associated with pet food.
