Eukanuba new "Naturally Wild" formulas

I for one feed Pro Plan Sensitive and it is (so far) the only food that Dublin hasn't had a problem with.  One piece of steak he nabbed off the counter last week had him so very sick for two days.  I could hear his tummy grumbling and he refused food for a day till he got settled down with is kibble and some cooked white rice.
Anyway my latest bag of PP had these massive chunks in it.  Rather greasy also.  I stopped the food and switched to a new bag which was fine.  I called in and they are sending for the samples. And sending coupons for a a new bag and other goodies he likes.  They think a machine had a problem and want to be sure exactly which machine.  I was assured that a formula change won't happen and knowing this product for 10 years now I can attest it is the same as day one.  Which is why I will stick with Pro Plan.  If I used Euk and they made changes without pre warning us, my dog would suffer very much.  I can't risk it.

The one thing I've noticed that the "premium" foods can't compete with is consistency.  I fed Pro Plan selects for about a year and it was NEVER different.  No matter what sized bag I got and when I got it they were always the same (which I loved).  I've always had inconsistency issues with every small-company food, with exception to Eagle Pack.

Excellent post, Houndmusic. Your advice is suitable regardless of what we feed. If a dog takes a turn for the worse, change their food by all means. And a little bit of runs from a food change is managable, compared to losing your beloved pet.

Many foods are changing in response to market pressure. containing more ingredients and volume listings similar to the former "premiums" because the consumer, you and I, are becoming more aware of nutrition for our pets. But, while the companies are changing the formulas to suit the market demand, they may also substitute ingredients if they can squeeze a dollar more out of it. And that's because, more and more, food companies are being bought out by bigger companies and investment management groups. People who don't have a clue about dog food. They just track  the "bottom line."

In my approach to feeding, I apply the engineer's rule. If it works, don't fix it. But things are beyond my control. Nutro is now owned by Mars, after having a leveraged buy-out from an investment firm. It used to be a family owned food. None of the local suppliers that I can frequent are carrying the large breed Lamb Meal and Rice. Just the regular. Whereas I and some hunters I know who have Labs for hunting dogs feed large breed formula. But hey, if it wasn't making the projected profit, it could get canceled.

Funny thing is, Shadow will be 5 years old this month and so I am switching him to senior formula, which comes in a large breed formula. But I have no specific brand loyalty. If the food didn't or doesn't work, I will change it in a heartbeat.

But it is an interesting dichotomy. While the foods are reflecting the market demand for premium style and exotic meats, it is also morphing due to the increasing infiltration by big business not previously associated with pet food.

Is this new line of their foods on their website? I don't see it.
$47 for 30lbs is so overpriced for what seems like very similar formulas from their other formulas. I don't see any improvement if there are any. They still  use inferior ingredients and have too much grains.  With all the better quality kibble that are out there (many are better priced too) along with raw type diets becoming more popular, one would be stupid to be paying this much for this.

    No

That seems awful high to me also.  With tax i pay just under $42 for a 30 poound bag of Taste of the Wild and it has no grain.

I can't believe anyone would be willing to pay the price for this mediocre stuff. I used to think Nutro was the most over-priced mediocre food on the market but this stuff has surpassed them...

Euk has always been pricier than Nutro here.  Right up there with Sci Die.

Thanks for speaking up. When I buy Nutro, I usually buy the large bag and average about 77 to 80 cents per pound. In the almost 3 years I have been here, no one has been able to adequately explain how 77 cents per pound is overpriced.

Choline Chloride is a kind of vitamin B. Choline Chloride can promote liver and kidney fat metabolism; Choline Chloride or acetylcholine synthesis based body, thus affecting the transmission of nerve signals. Choline is also required for in vivo synthesis of motioning source of methyl. In many natural foods contain Choline Chloride, but not enough to meet the modern concentration on the animal feed industry, the need for rapid growth. Therefore, the feed synthesis of Choline Chloride should be added to meet their needs. Lack of Choline Chloride can lead to fatty liver, slow growth, reduced egg production rate, mortality increased and so on.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. First, I don't trust the company. Second look at the protein source. It's basically potato.

Venison, Potato, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Barley,

In reality, these are the top ingred's of the food which makes up the bulk of the food

Potato, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Brewers Rice, Ground Whole Grain Barley,

Yuck. I will not feed anything that doesn't have actual MEAT (in meal form) in the first couple ingreds.

Will the mods please edit tiana1988 post to remove the link?

    Ick.

Not something I would feed- but I used to be a big fan of Euk, the puppy food was great!

These foods are entirely GRAIN based. Where the heck is the meat ? The meals are so far down the ingredient line they are practically insignificant. I wouldn't touch any food that lead off with a WHOLE meat followed by NUMEROUS grains w/a 10 ft pole. Also Eukanuba isn't made with any USDA approved ingredients like the majority of high quality foods... ie Wellness, Innova, NV Instinct and so forth. They still use ingredients that have been rejected from the human food chain for dubious reasons....mold, rancidity, stale or who knows what. The protein content is plant based, the fat content is far too high for the protein content, there's probably Ethoxyquin in the generic fish meal and PCB's in the generic fish oil. The OFA ratios are WAY off and far too low to have any significance other than for "show". Why would anyone even consider feeding a food that is #1... species inappropriate, #2... has ingredients of questionable origin and quality, #3... in all seriousness nutritionally insufficient and #4... is made by a company whose integrity is questionable and cares more about profit than quality food for your pet ?
