pro plan selects for Premium Feeders

Just switched our guy from nutro ultra to pro plan select salmon and he's doing great on it. When PPS first came out (turkey-barley) we tried it but my female got very fat on it.  I know this time not to feed as much.  His coat is getting very shiny from this food and he seems to be digesting it well.  Just wanted to pass on a good food review for those of you thinking of switching from nutro.  I think this is probably equal to it if not better.

I have often heard many good things about the salmon & rice, such as great muscle tone as well as a beautiful coat. Jessie's allergic to salmon so it's off our list though, but thanks for sharing.

wow is it expensive. Double the price of Nature's variety salmon and rice, which has better but similar ingredients.

I was feeding Wolfie the PPS Salmon & Brown rice for quite awhile now.  I recently switched him to Wellness CORE Ocean, but not for any particular reason (lol).  He has been having some "gunky" tear-stains, and even though he has a black face and it doesn't show, I wanted to experiment and see if it was due to the beet pulp in PPS.  So far he's been on CORE ocean for about a week and I have noticed a difference.  I will wait and see if it improves by the time the bag is done.

I do still feed Falon 1/2 of the PPS Salmon.  She gets 1 cup of Pinnacle duck & potato + 1/2 cup of PPS Salmon 2x a day.  I will most likely continue this regardless of what I do with Wolfie.

However, I do agree with Mudpuppy---it is pretty expensive compared to other Petsmart foods.  I think the salmon is like $28 for 17.5 lbs.

Wow you are right!  And I am switching OFF Nature's Variety b/c I found it too expensive.  Pro Plan Select is $28 for a 17# bag.

I looked at the Pro Plan site and it said they don't use corn, but in the ingredients list corn gluten meal is listed 5th.  Hmmmm....

I'm not seeing any corn or corn gluten in the PPS Salmon & brown rice ingredients list.  There is canola meal in it.  Our dog is really doing well on it.  He was scratching and biting himself and actually had red looking skin in places that is now clearing up.  We think he has either a flax or sunflower oil allergy and this food contains neither. I'll pay the price if it keeps working for him.

The salmon and brown rice is the most decent formula of the selects line (all the others are grainy IMO and contain corn gluten despite what they say about not using corn) but yes it is very expensive.

Dub was on the Turkey Barley puppy the first year and had goopy eyes which I never thought was the food.  Then I switched to the regular Pro Plan Salmon and Rice and it went away.  So we mix the Selects Salmon and regular pro plan Salmon and he is doing very well on it.  Neither have corn or wheat which I have to avoid.  It is expensive though.  I call Pro Plan once a month or so and they will send some coupons.  Also I have gotten a few 5.00 off coupons for Pro Plan in the newspaper.

The select ingredients are certainly better than pro plan's usual offers, but it's got generic fish meal in it. Definitely not worth the price for that reason alone.

    Fish Meal

AAFCO: The clean, rendered, dried ground tissue of undecomposed whole fish or fish cuttings, either or both, with or without the extraction of part of the oil.

Like with all other animal sources, if a type isn't specified, you never know what type or quality of fish is used.
According to US Coast Guard regulations, all fish meal not destined for human consumption must be conserved with Ethoxyquin (unless the manufacturer has a special permit). This preservative is banned from use in foods for human consumption except for the use of very small quantities as a color preservative for spices. So unless the manufacturer either presents a permit or states "human grade" fish or fish meal is used, you can be pretty sure Ethoxyquin is present in the food even if it is not listed.

that is my biggest concern with foos containing fish
