All grown up and stranger every day (jennie_c_d)

Emma is almost 4 1/2, now. She's settled down, into a REALLY nice dog. I've finally found a combination of foods and supplements that WORKS for her, and the change is incredible!

Emma used to be a total chowhound. She'd eat anything, any time, anywhere. She was the very definition of "food whore". She literally has eaten until swallowing made her YELP.

Now? Not so much, LOL. She eats until she's finished, then walks away from her bowl. When she first started that, I flipped out and had tons of bloodwork run, and she was fine. She's getting into a habit, just the last... two weeks, maybe. She'll eat about half of her breakfast. I pick it up, and stick it in the fridge. She gets a little lunch. Sometimes, I offer the breakfast, and sometimes, I'll offer something different. She eats, either way, but only a little bit. Then, I mix her dinner with whatever is left in her bowl, and she finishes the whole thing, and wants her bedtime snack. She's a night eater! Who knew?

She spent the first 3 years of her life looking like death, warmed over. Her coat was awful. If she hadn't had so much muscle, nobody would have believed that I fed her. Her ribs, hip bones, and vertebrae were all clearly visible. If she got sick, you could see her skull clearly, as well. Over the last year, her coat has come in wonderfully, and she's gained about 4 lbs. She is MORE muscular than before, and she looks healthy. She's still lean enough (ribs are quite easy to feel, but no bones are seen), but I watch her weight, to make sure she isn't gaining. Any heavier would be rough on her joints.

She doesn't get sick as much, anymore, either. The GI upsets have calmed to a quiet storm (from hurricane levels, LOL). Her allergies are still there (and the food allergies are worse), but the general "allergic" state has calmed down, quite a bit. Her skin rarely gets yeasty, anymore. she's had ONE ear ache, in a year, and I'm not convinced it wasn't something (like sand) in there, bugging her. I am so thrilled to say that she doesn't get Benedryll on a daily basis, anymore. Only on an as needed.

All of this happened.... when I stopped cooking her food. I mostly did it out of laziness and frustration. NO food was working, and I was sick of trying, and cooking that dang meat every week was TOO MUCH WORK (I was exhausted, working 3 jobs, with 2 dogs who didn't get along)! I stopped, and she started changing. I'm STILL amazed, by it.

The night eating thing is WEIRD! I never knew she had a preference for when to eat her food.

That's great that she's doing so well.  Willow is a night eater too.

Its nice to hear success stories.  My two are morning eaters.  They've almost quit eating more than once a day.  They've been totally on raw for over a month now and they look great, other than Onyx is blowing her coat now.  Actually she's a little overweight from what I would like, but thats just a matter of adjusting her food.  They've been getting full raw chickens once or twice a week, maybe every 5 days, I think I'll start cutting hers in half.  The rest of the time we've been doing cuts of stuff with some organ meat for variety.  Their outdoor kennel has gone back to being self cleaning and that is sooooo nice.

I'm glad everything is working out for you Jennie.  You too Emma!

That is so cool!  I'm kicking myself that it took me almost twelve years to really commit to what I knew was best for Ben.  It's difficult and expensive but the results are amazing.

but I watch her weight, to make sure she isn't gaining.

The first time I said this about Ben, I had to do a mental double take to make sure I was not dreaming!  Doesn't it feel great?

Ben likes several meals a day, too.  In fact, many years ago I taught him to bring me his food dish at meal time because he had this big giant crate that I couldn't crawl into to fish out the bowl.  Now throughout the day he'll bring me the bowl and throw it at my feet - CLANG! - and he does the same to visitors, to my constant embarassment.

That's really cute, Becca. I'd have to find a cookie, or something, if he threw his bowl at meSmile

I love watching her weight! At first, she got too fat, too fast, because I had never, ever watched her weight, before. Now, she's doing pretty well. She gained half a pound while we were in KY, but she looks more lean, so I'm pretty sure it's muscle. Her harness fit differently when we left than it did when we arrived.

Max is a surprisingly light eater too, given his size - 60 lbs. I don't cook for him, but then I don't cook at all, for anybody, if I can avoid it.  He eats EP Holistic and I give him 1-1/2 cups in the morning and if he finishes it (sometimes he doesn't) he gets another 1/2 cup at night. His weight stays pretty constant, so I guess that's the right amount for him.

Becca--That is soooo cute, what Ben does.  I want him.  I bet Willow would like to learn something like that from him, she's a big diva.

That reminds me of the story my Dad always told us about his dog when he was little. When it was hungry, the dog would hang his food bowl from his lower canine tooth and come up to my dad and look at him with it just hanging there. I always laughed when Dad told this story because I can just picture it!Stick out tongue

Oh, I almost forgot. I started buying her Bravo patties maybe... a month ago? I made a thread about it. Anyways... they're working GREAT for her, and they're so stinking convenient. I love them, and I'm totally willing to drive to get them. I'm thrilled she doesn't have to eat processed bone meal or calcium powder. She's getting actual BONE, now. It's very finely ground, and she's tolerating it wonderfully.

Emma now needs a cute food bowl trick, LOL. Maybe I just need to visit Becca and let Ben throw his bowl at me... That might be better! Wink

Onyx throws the water bowl around.  I DO NOT FIND THIS CUTE!  Sometimes its not even completely empty she just wants fresh water...Ben's lucky to have understanding people.

I did not teach her this, its one of the things I do not teach, like shaking a paw.  It drives me nuts when a dog constantly paws at you for attention because somewhere along the way he was rewarded for it.
