No interest in bones..

    No interest in bones..

Maze used to LOVE marrow bones.. I couldn't put it down fast enough for her. But I bought her a knuckle bone the other day and I ended up giving to Wolf. She didn't want anything to do with it.. I thought maybe she doesn't like those anymore so I picked her up a marrow bone today.. And again. She wants nothing to do with it anymore.. Oh she licked it after Crombie nibbled on it but other then that. It's sitting in her bowl... I even tried putting her through her list of tricks then giving it to her (this works for cookies she spits out) and again.. Nothing....

Any advice on how I can make bones more appealing to her? Maybe if I threw it in the microwave and warmed it up... Hmmm...

Cooked bones are not safe. Microwaving is cooking. You could pour some hot (not boiling) water over it to lightly cook the stuff on the outside, but that will likely cause the marrow to slide out. It's fatty, and melts when heated.

Did she just eat? Maybe she's too full to eat a bone.

Nope. She eats in the morning and I gave her this bone around 2 so it's thawed out in her food dish. Lol..

I'll leave it out for her for awhile and see what happens..

How goes the rest of her diet?  Is she eating normally other than her lack of interest in the bones?  It seems odd to me.  Maybe check on her teeth and feel about her jaw for sore spots?  Other than that, has she had any tummy upset incidents with bones lately that might be putting a damper on her enthusiasm?  Crusher knows that milk makes his tummy sore and he will not touch it.  This morning Tyler spilt half of Kali's bottle on the floor and while normally, Crusher will attack Onyx if she tries to get to dropped food before him, Tyler said he sniffed at it and walked away.  Onyx cleaned up.  Maybe Maze has some memory of tummy troubles?

Everything else is fine. Her appetite and drinking are normal. It's just her lack of interest in bones.

But I think I figured it out. When something is too big, Maze will wait until we break it down for her. I keep forgetting she isn't a large dog but I keep buying bones like she is. So they might be to big for her. I'm going to pick up a smaller pack of bones and see if that is it. If it doesn't work then it's off to the vet. Lol.

Now this morning, AFTER I gave Wolf the bone and he cleaned off all the meat but left the marrow.. Maze went upstairs and took it back (they share bones alot) and is now happily chewing on the bone.. WTH?

Maybe she just had a sore jaw before, or a sore tummy, or a stuffy nose and couldn't smell it... its hard to say.  If she's back on them, I wouldn't worry.  Maybe mention it to the vet if you take her in for her ears, but I doubt its a big deal.

I'll mention it to him of course. I just found it curious that when both bones had meat on them, Maze wanted nothing to do with them but as soon as they were stripped, she wanted them.. Weird dog..
