    Food Pulled From the Shelves

    Hi,

I have a rescued Doberman. He had been allowed to free-feed for quite some time...when I got him he weighed 125 pounds. He is now down to 104 pounds...we have made some great progress.

I had trouble finding a food that he could tolerate and finally found Nutro's Venison & Wild Rice...which has been pulled from the shelves due to a questionable ingredient. While I am happy that they are taking steps necessary to not endanger the dogs, I am now trying to find another brand he can tolerate.

I went with Nature's Variety, venison & wild rice and mixed it gradually with his old food to make the transition...now we are out of the Nutro and he is totally on the Nature's Variety...back to the same problem...loose stools. Not as bad as before,

The only thing I have not tried is lamb. Does anyone have any suggestions. It took me quite some time to get his bowels under control...I'd like to keep them under control.

    Thanks.

Well, my guess is that your dog had trouble with the NV venison because of the various amounts of other grains in it besides the rice, not to mention NV (although a good food) has a long ingredient list, some dogs may have trouble with it.  It sounds like your dog does well with primarily rice as a carbohydrate source (rice is known to firm up stools).  Have you tried Wellness Rice and Venison formula?  It has a similar nutrient profile to the Nutro Venison formula, with rice as the only carb source.  It may be worth a shot.

If you don't have access to the Wellness, and have had good luck with Nutro products, go ahead and try the Lamb and Brown Rice and see how he does with that.  If you want to go with lamb, you could also try Canidae's Lamb/Rice or California Natural's Lamb /Rice formulas.  Both are simple formulas, and good options for sensitive tummies

You might want to consider trying one of these :  Natural Balance Venison or Canine Caviar Venison & Split Pea.   I'm gonna guess that you didn't read the post about all the dogs that have been dying from Nutro foods. Do a search of past posts... there's a post w/the link to the article that was on here about a week or so ago.

Sorry to hear about the Nutro being pulled.  There was talk that they had run into some problems

Try to stick with companies that have not been recalled, like Natura makers of Cal. Natural , Innova. One of the Cal Natural may be good for your dog.

Many forget about this Eagle Pack feed but it works wonders on Larger dogs with digestive issues.
