    Cooked meats can cause cancer???

Hey everyone--I was just looking at a dog forum that is for holistic and raw feeders.  There was some info that I read that has me upset, worried, concerned.

There was a statement that giving cooked meats to a dog can cause cancer.  As someone who homecooks all the time this has me worried.  I was aware that cooking reduces some of the nutrients.  But, never that it causes cancer.

Does anyone know anything more on this?

    Thanks.

    Lori

PS--Also, they are saying potato too!

Some raw feeders are a little.... exclusive. LOL They believe that EVERYTHING but raw causes cancer, parvo, allergies, epilepsy, death, doom, and destruction. Even what I feed (ground meat and bone, with added veggies) is wrong. Nevermind that my dog cannot physically handle whole prey.

Soooo... in raw forums? I take everything with a grain of salt. They go a little overboard, sometimes.

I've heard that burnt, over, over cooked meat can be correlated to cancer.Something like burnt meat contains carcinogenics. But never normal or undercooked meat..

And smoked meat. Smoking is bad for everything.

If cooking foor caused cancer, wouldn't we all have it by the time we were 20 ;) ? As interested as I find raw feeding, I think it definitely has its fair share of crazies who think that everything on earth will give you cancer.

Yes, charcoal grilling does induce carcinogen-esque chemicals onto the food. But no more than you would inhale from snuggling close to a warm fwood fire in winter :) Unless you routinely burn food and feed it to Willow, I think she will be fine - hehe. The cancer hysteria can get a little out of hand sometimes. Products of the Maillard reaction (browing/burning) called advanced glycosylated end products, can cause mild increased inflammatory gene products - but that is a) when fed in high amounts and 2) in mice. And the specifically charcoal grill-cooked meat does have a few more chemical issues. But nothing to really worry too much about, unless burned meat that is the only thing the animal is ever eat for the rest of its life . Like I said, we'd all have cancer by now if simply cooked food = cancer.

Yes, just charcoal, over cooked grilling.

i never heard that cooked meat would cause cancer.  Geeezzz, cooked causes cancer, raw causes othe things.  maybe our dogs should only eat veggies!  LOL

Hee.  Fats in raw meat can start going bad, and turn into potential cancer causing agents also.  Among many other potential carcinogens that raw meat has.

There's risks and benefits in every approach to feeding.  It's our task simply to sit down and weigh these and come up with solutions for our dogs that fit their needs, welfare, and our lifestyle.

As long as it's raw meaty bones, prey model.  Big Smile

Well, you'd think I'd have learned by now not to panic over something I've read on the internet.  But, I really did!  Thank you guys for shedding some light on  this issue and putting it into perspective.
