Question about Orijen dry dog food.

Only a tiny bit OT, but to respond to the concern about carbs with a cancer dog.  It's my understanding that the GRAIN carbs are the fuel for cancers, not all carbs.  Callie has really good cancer diet info so it would be worthwhile to PM her for more info.

I've heard that white potatoes are just as bad as high-glycemic grains for both inflammation and cancer, though. Not sure if that's true. Really, the only way to get a true low-carb diet is to go home-prepared raw or cooked. Or feed a low-carb kibble that is heavily supplemented with home-prepared zero carb foods.

Anyway, to the OP, you still need to add fresh fish oil to your kibble. Omega-3's are unstable and despite what bags of processd preserved dog foods claim, they are not in there in sufficient quantities by the time they get to your dog.

Thanks! I wonder why it would be grain carbs and not all carbs?

Cancer cells need glucose to live, so any high glycemic carbohydrates should be avoided, including potatoes.

I have been talking to my husband about the cancer cells and correlation to of carbs feeding the cells. He is on a few cancer boards, and at least with humans, research has shown that once the carbs get to the blood stream it changes and becomes gluocose, but has no effect on the cancer cells. I have been asking him his opinion on this for a while, same subject has been brought up on his cancer boards for people with cancer, for cancer patients(human) it has not been proven for this to be true.  My Husband is not a Dr. but works closely with the medical field. I have noticed when my Pug with the mast cell tumors is on any food with grains, she seems to get more mast cell tumors, grain free, they literally disappear, so don't know if it is from this theory of cancer cells feeding on the sugars from carbs, or something else. What research has been done to actually prove this theory? My Husband was also wondering if it might be different with dogs? You would think it would be the same, canine or human.

Here's an interesting read from  Dr. Ogilvie DVM, Professor of Oncology and Internal Medicine,Colorado State University:

    Hi all,

Well I bought a bag today and I'm shocked at what I saw....

Usually, well most of the time Aisha will go to her food dish, grab one and run away. Sometimes not returning to her dish for a few minutes. Well, it was time to try it out, and it was her last meal of the day. So I put some in a bowl for her and called her over. She ate her whole serving without leaving the bowl for a second! She absolutely loved it! And she looked quite happy after she finished eating lol.

Now I'm just kinda waiting and seeing if she has a bad reaction to it. So far so good, I'll know tomorrow when she goes to the bathroom if there's any trouble. She loved it so much I hope that she is able to stick with this food.

That's good news - hopefully her tummy handles it well. My girls are on Orijen Fish formula and homecooking. They really like it and I think the ingredients are great compared to many other foods out there.

So far her tummy is handling it really well her, stool is normal. She seems fuller quicker now. I still offer her 1/4 three times a day, and I keep it down for about 20 minutes. She always finishes morning and night meals, but maybe eats half of her lunch meal. I thought about only feeding her twice a day, but I'm too worried about hypoglycemia, and then I thought about free feeding, but she can be kind of a piggy some days. But all in all she loves the food and I'm curious to see how she benefits from it. Smile

We just switched to Orijen too.  The fish formula for our sensitive shorthair and the adult formula for our golden.  They seem to love it, not that either of them ever turned down food before!  One interesting thing though....when we feed the dogs in the morning we prepare their dishes and then ask them to enter the kitchen sit down and wait until we give them permission to begin eating...ever since we switched (about a week ago) our cat has begun to come into the kitchen and steal a few kibbles out of their bowls!!!  She has NEVER done this and she is a super picky eater!!!  So apparently we should switch her too!  I will post any updates on their coat, skin, activity level as well....Smile
