Lamb bones...hmmm....

    Lamb bones...hmmm....

I stopped at Whole Foods today to get some marrow bones and chicken wings, which I give to the dogs as treats. I struck out on the beef marrow bones (it's so irritating--they get them in on Tuesdays and by Saturday which is when I can actually make it there, they're all gone most of the time) but they did have lamb soup bones. I picked some up, but I'm really an amateur with raw feeding and bones and what not. My guys both love the beef soup bones and we've had no problems with them trying to actually eat them or crack them open. Likewise with the chicken wings (now that they've figured out what they are and what to do with them!) they crunch them up and there's no gulping or problems with them. So they seem to be pretty bones-savvy.

Anyone ever fed lamb bones? Do they end up being recreational or edible? They seem pretty tiny but I'm not sure tiny enough for them to actually be eaten. Whaddya guys think?

I myself would NEVER feed soup bones to eat.  THey're too sharp and too small.  I buy my dogs racks of lamb breast ( ribs) and give them each an entire rib bone w/meat.  Those are somewhat more pliant and too large to be swallowed and are not sharp. The big dogs actually eat them, the smaller dogs eat the meat and use the bones recreationally.  The safest bones for dogs to eat would be bird bones because they're cartilagenous and hollow.  Hard, calcified bones I think, should be large and used only for recreational chewing to avoid having some seriously cracked teeth. Lamb breast bones are flat , thin and full of marrow which makes them easier to consume.

Well, what I'm saying is that I do give soup bones recreationally and they don't even try to eat them. And I give chicken with bones to eat, and they do fine doing that too. But the lamb bones are a lot smaller than the beef bones I give recreationally, but bigger than poultry bones, so I'm not sure whether they'd be for recreation or if they'd be edible.

My guys treat lamb bones as edible.  We've used them for a little over a year with no issues.

lamb and pork bones are very soft and highly edible- much safer than beef bones, which can sometimes crack teeth and sometimes be difficult to digest.

The difference in a rec bone and an edible one depends on the size of the dog. My maltese can't eat beef rib bones, but my lab/chow mix sure can. I'm sure your dogs will have no problem consuming lamb bones.

Can someone take a pic of a *safe* lamb bone to eat for a 7mnth old Golden Rtrvr; I myself have fed Beef soup bones in the past to my 3 little dogs, but one of those dogs DID break a tooth 4yrs ago.

I rarely give bones now because of the fear of them.

I need to know what's safe for 3 - 5# dogs and a 50# 7mnth old puppy -  thank you....please provide pics if you can so that I know what they actually look like.

I know what chicken wings look like, however.

I have a 19 lb. cairn terrier and I give him raw lamb bones that are meaty, from the leg.  It takes him 2-3 days, but he eats it all.  I get them at Wal-Mart.  Hope this helps give you a bit of an idea.
