roll over

    roll over

I have been training lucy some tricks recently.  So far she knows, sit, down, paw, other paw, high five, come, bang and working on stay.  I want to train her roll over but I am having a hard time doing this.  She is a very hyper and wiggly dog and it's hard to get her to lay down long enough to do it.  Also what is the best way to teach speak?

It's best to train when the dog has been exercised so the dog is a little tired. That way the dog will be calm. (hopefully)To teach "roll over", have the dog lay down. Using a pea-size treat in your closed hand, let the dog smell it and guide the dog's nose to it's back side or hip area. If he follows your hand, continue to guide his nose so his body turns over. Praise lavishly and treat. If he doesn't seem interested in the treat you're using, use a better one like pieces of hot dog or left over steak. Don't over work this 'trick'.

If the dog is "wiggly", use the same process that Idyharley has suggested (make sure the dog is lying down resting on one hip - if he's like the "Sphinx", he's too poised to just get up), but reward him even for following the treat for a little bit.  What you are doing is rewarding ever-improving "approximations" of the rollover behavior until you get the whole thing.  Each time, you hold out for more of a roll.  Short sessions for this trick, and make a big deal out of the first roll by giving multiple treats as a "jackpot".

I taught this trick to my late Gordon Settler in once session, literly two tries.  I had treats of course asked him to sit, then lay down and I rolled him over.  The next time I ask his to sit, treat - down, treat and rolled him over and treat and praise etc.  After that, I showed him a treat and he would toll across the room!!  LOL

This was a family faviorte trick for all him 15 years, my kids use to love to ask him roll over and people just though he was the most talented dog ever!![:D]

It finally clicked today.  The second session working with her she got it.  I said roll then rolled her over myself and then gave her a treat.  Today she finally gets it and will do it on command.  She stands up instantly though after she is done. lol

    Yey!
I did the same - I just physically rolled him over, showing the way :)
Each time I did it, I put less and less pressure. In a couple of goes he didn't need me at all - he got it!

Thats how it was with her.  Just using food to lead her around didn't work because she was just too spazzy and would jump back up.  Thanks for all your help everyone!
