    Leash Training a hound

I am adopting a purebred bloodhound and she is 1 year old and 90 lbs. She likes to pull alot when walking. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what might work. I dont know if i should use a halti because she has so  much excess skin in the face. We will be going to obedience school in a month but until then walking is quite the task

You are one LUCKY person to be getting a hound.  There's a great book called "Playtraining your dog" which I highly recommend.  It focuses mainly on sighthounds but I think it can be translated and the techniques used for all dogs.

Don't let ANYONE tell you that hounds are dumb.  They're not.  They are very brilliant, however they need to be properly motivated.  Play is a great motivator and reward.  Also keep sessions short. 2-5 minutes tops.  Repeat 2 or 3 times a day.  If you do this, and use the playtraining method, your dog will be more than willing to follow your instructions.

In the meantime, make yourself more interesting than what your dog is pulling to.  Carry hotdogs, training treats, roast beef or whatever makes your dog go crazy.  Squeak like a toy, get excited when your dog looks back at you.

Most of all with this amazing breed, please get involved in scenting.  These hounds love to follow a trail.  They will follow a trail until they drop.  Give your dog the opportunity to do what it's instincts are telling him/her to do.

Good luck and please post pics when you get your precious hound.

You could use an Easy Walk Harness if you don't want to use a Halti or Gentle Leader.  This site has some free lessons on polite leash walking (and a whole lot of other stuff):

As a hound owner myself, I congratulate you on your new "body pillow". [:D]

Oh wow yes! Another hound owner! You have already gotten some excellent advice. Just in general I find that with a hound the part about making yourself incredibly interesting and rewarding to be around is of huge benefit to any and all training you'll do with him.

I don't really have that much else to add other than congratulations on your hound. It takes a very special kind of person to love them, but it's so rewarding!

    Bloodhound-

Welcome.  This is a wonderful place to come for lots of good advice.  I'd second what Spiritdogs says as far as the Easy Walk.  I haven't used one myself, but I know of quite a few people who have had good experiences with them.

Of course in return for all this good advice we do expct pics of your new pup.
