    Wellness is removing Menadione

I emailed Wellness a few days ago asking if they would consider removing Menadione from their foods, here is the reply I got:

    *****************************
Thank you for contacting Old Mother Hubbard. Since launching NGW dry dog this past fall, we have heard some feedback surrounding our use of Vitamin K (Menadione). Some of the feedback was from people who were simply curious, and some of it was negative, questioning our use of Vitamin k. We listened to all feedback, re-evaluated the ingredient, and have decided to remove Vitamin K from all dry dog diets. Below is some background into this important decision.

Why did we add Vitamin K in the first place?

The intent of adding Vitamin K to Wellness was to present the most robust nutrition available to the dog. The nutritional functions of Vitamin K are proper blood clotting and for building strong bones. We know that bacteria in the dog#%92s gut synthesize their own Vitamin K, but our concern was whether or not they produced enough. Diminished capacity for bacterial synthesis of Vitamin K can be inhibited during times of stress or illness. The NRC (National Research Council) has suggested that it might recommend supplemental Vitamin K as part of a standard diet, and Wellness wants to be on the forefront of nutrition and stay current with research.

Why did we decide to remove Vitamin K?

Before making any decisions, we first spoke to all nutritional experts at our disposal. As it turns out, all nutritionists unanimously agreed that, although a dog will have diminished capacity to produce adequate Vitamin K (especially when on antibiotics), a dog will produce enough on their own when healthy. Wellness is a healthy diet, supporting overall wellbeing. A dog being fed our diets is less likely to need antibiotics. Once the NRC publishes their research findings, we will better understand their suggestion; however, for now we are fully confident that the removal of Vitamin K for these diets is the right way to go.

When will Vitamin K be removed?

We will remove Vitamin K from our nutritional premix sometime in the 4th quarter. Upon the next printing of bags, it will no longer appear on the ingredient panels.

I don't understand where they were going with the "a dog being fed our diet is less likely to need antibiotics" ??  Not sure how that is probable...

Well, I took it as since it's a healthy food they will get sick less therefore making them less likely to need antibiotics.  They sort of led into that in the sentence before the one you mentioned.

On the other hand, Willow needed more antibiotics while on Wellness than ever before.  She had struvite crystals while on it and many bladder and UT infections.
Also, a few others here have had similar experiences with the same and other types of bacterial infections.

I think my pup may have had a bacterial infection (intestinally) because when he was on Wellness he had so much diarrhea (MASSIVE, discolored amounts) that he had to get an IV at the vet for dehydration....switched and problem was gone.  Wellness lost me after that....

Same happened to my pup.  He got dehydrated on Wellness super5 puppy, and he also needed an IV at the ER animal hospital.  I returned the remaining portion of the bag and got a different brand.  He is fine now.

Yep, count us in. I ended up with 2 dogs developing crystals and UTIs on Wellness. I tried the food on 2 seperate occasoins and had the same issue.

I use wellness Fish and Sweet Potato. I have never had any problems, I have been using ir for a year, and my dog LOVES it. I even use it as treats from time to time. My mom's dog had a really bad case of hot spots and she changed to Wellness and has not had any problems since. Some dogs just do better with it.

I have a friend that has had her two male Bearded Collies on the Wellness Fish for 3 + years, and through the formula changes, with no problems at all. They do wonderfully on the stuff! She has even tried some of the other Wellness formula's only to see things go wrong. Back to the fish she would go and all would return to normal.  What Wellness formulas are causing the majority of problems?

I've been using Wellness for 3 months with no problems at all. I am really impressed with the small amount of stool and the firm consistency compared to grocery store food. Maybe some dogs just digest it better? I use venison and brown rice b/c my dog was thought to have food allergies. Luckliy she doesn't so I am about to switch to Super 5 mix. My neighbor's dog has been on wellenss for a long time and he looks great. He is 8 and now on the senior formula and is a large breed dog, but looks much younger than 8!
