    a question on herbal supplement

I know  most of the individuals who post on this site are into natural and or holistic whatever types of food…I have never objected to my clients feeding so called holistic diets as long as their pets were healthy..Which most of them were…I have a question pertaining to a certain type of a holistic food supplement…There is a section in one of the vet journals on complimentary medicine  This article discusses the feeding of  things like the herb, Devil Claw, freeze dried  cat#%92s claw, Advocado and the main one discussed is the feeding of Yucca for arthritis problems…Haws anyone ever used it or heard of it??

Again I am not totally anti complimentary so be gentle

I've heard of them all, as I work in a health food store, part time:)

I've only used yucca, for inflamation in general. It contains a compound that acts as a steroid. It's amazing! I buy whole yucca roots, in the produce section, peel them, and boil them. The dogs and I love them. They taste similar to a sweet potato (they are a root veggie) and soothe any kind of inflamation.

I have a horse with joint issues. and have done quite a bit of research on joint supps.  Unfortunately, these is not an incredible amount of research out there in regards to the effect of these herbs on people, horses, or dogs.  From everything I have read, while these herbs MIGHT relieve some the the pain from athritis, it really doesn't do much for the joints themsleves.

One would be better off getting a supp that contained glucosimine and MSM.  Chondrotin is in many of these supps and will not hurt anything, but really has low bioavailibilty--it works much better when injected.

We (yes, all three of us!) take glucosamine and MSM every day. I can vouch for the fact that that stuff works! Emma would tell you, too, if she had opposable thumbs[;)]

Yucca is like a super herb.  It not only helps with inflamation, but breath and poop eating.

Anyways, my vet is somewhat of a holisitic vet. Not totally, but she knows alot about herbs.  Their website is www.animalwellnessclinic.com.  Her name is Dr. Puerling.  She talked herbs with me for a little while and set me straight on Neem Oil, which I guess is not as good as I thought.

Yep i've heard of them all [:)]

I've used devils claw in the past for it's analgesic and anti-inflammatory affects.

Yucca can also be used for diabetes, intestinal parasites and as an anti-inflammatory.

My vet(convential) informs me that cats claw can also be used cancer, urinary infections, dermatitis and for boosting the immune system. It may also be useful for FLV as well as viral diseases such as herpes, shingles and AIDS.

try that. Their website is currently under construction because she brought in more foods.  They are closed today, so if you want to contact her, try Wednesday.

She's not only my vet, but a client of mine.  When she asked to bring in one of my company's natural lines, I knew she was the vet for my babies.

My mom uses yucca and cat's claw, glucosamine and chondroitin for her arthritis and is amazing how well she does on it, I can always tell when she does not take it, because those are the days when she cannot even lift her arm above her head or her she can't flex her fingers and legs are very swollen.

Cat's Claw is amazing, is good for cancer, arthritis, gastritis, immune system and digestive disorders.  I always give testimony about it because it saved my father's life. My father is 66 yrs old, and 10 yrs ago his PSA count was 10.5 they put him on Proscar 5 mg 1 daily after 3 mos his PSA count was 27.5 as you know the word "prostate cancer" is not music to a man's ear, my uncle who is an entomologist and was the Dean of Entomology at Duke or U Mass ( I can't recall right now he has been a Dean at both ), recommended it to him, long story short, my father stopped taking the Proscar, and would take the Cat's Claw in a powder form dissolved in orange juice, after 6 mos of use, I am going to sound redundant...after 6 mos of use his PSA count was down to 6 after 9 mos down to 1.5 and has stayed between 1.5 - 3 for the past 8-9 yrs.

I lost one friend with AIDS, so when another developed it I already knew about the Cat's Claw, he was hospitalized 07312001 the doctors sent him to a hospice 3 mos later because there was nothing more they could do, while at the hospice I visited him every day and I would give him the Cat's Claw after 1 yr my friend went home on a wheelchair is true, but he was alive, he kept up with the Cat's Claw, eventually gained enough strength to walk on his own again and did well for a long time, sadly he drowned at the beach trying to save his partner.

Was it the Cat's Claw? I think so.  I am not saying it was just the Cat's Claw, or that is a miracle herb, but I know in my father's case it sure has helped keep everything under control.  And my friend, maybe it worked in combo with all the other drugs he was taking, but pulled him out of the grave, when the doctors had already given up.
