    evo and an active dog

I've pretty much decided that this fall i'm going to switch Kaiser to evo. Today i was in the pet store reading the package, and i noticed that it was low carb. Would a low carb food be acceptable for an extremely active dog? Kaiser is constantly running and playing.

I think it depends on how your dog reacts to the food--i.e. how your dog's system digests and utilizes carbs vs. proteins.  I know a handful of "active" dogs that lost ALOT of weight on EVO and had to be switched, but I know dogs that are very active and keep weight on wonderfully.  Like I said, it really depends on the dog, so it is worth giving a try and seeing how it goes :)

I think EVO is great for active dogs! It's a fatty and more calorie rich food than most other dog foods. The extra protein is great for active dogs, as well. Carbs aren't easily digested by most dogs, anyway. Good luck! BTW, I've gave great luck with EVO. I've been feeding it to my firecracker Min Pin for a few months now.

Just to clarify.....carbs only cause digestion problems when they make up the majority of the diet, not just the fact that they are in the food :)

Some carbs are digested very well, simple carbs (sugars) for instance. They are digested so fast that the body hardly has time to utilize them and then they can be stored as fat. Complex carbs come in several forms (ie:fruits and veggies), some are more easily digested than others and it also depends on how they are processed (or not processed).

So, you can't make an acurate statement when you say that carbs are not easily digested. It's all dependent on the "type" of carbohydrate and the source.

To the question, about keeping weight on with EVO, my chi's are currently on the EVO rotation, and they are doing just fine with their weight. I just feed less than with the Eagle Pack Holistic fish.

Are any of your furbabies still growing?  I ask because high protien can cause a growing large breed dog to grow too fast.  I've had experience with a customer who fed his Argentenian mastiff Innova Evo and the dog did horrible on it.  Too skinny.  Joint issues.  And for some odd reason very dry skin.  Although the customer really believed in high protien foods, he switched to Merrick and says the dog is doing much better.

I'm not saying that Innova Evo is a bad food.  I have just found from experience that large breed pups do horrible on it.

EVO is not recommended for large breed pups.  I won't feed EVO to my dogs before the age of two.
