    Stool question...

Okay - I can't believe I'm actually asking this - but since I've taken a flying leap into changing nutrition & food I figured I'd ask....

What is a normal stool like?

Here's the reasoning and long story behind my question.  I've used several different foods: Performatrin, Performatrin Ultra, Performatrin Natural, Purina One, Purina Pro Plan, Diamond, and Canidae.  We tried a variety of Performatrin products because they came recommended by our vet and were fairly inexpensive.  They must have changed their formula, because in the space of one bag - his coat dulled and his poops jumped in number and size (5-7 a day!!!).  Thus, we jumped around within the Performatrin brand to see if we could control the poops and the coat.  No avail.  So I switched.  We were on Diamond, but Tux (the dobe) didn't do well on it and I had to drive to the US to get it.  Switched them to One and my lab did so well that I left him - until Purina told me that Pro Plan and One were the same product.  (Price per pound was cheaper on the Pro Plan in the US - so we switched.)  I switched Tux to Pro Plan Sensitive and he did okay, but we didn't get rid of the dull flaky coat.   To make a long story short, I was told a year ago to try Canidae, but it is SO expensive here, I'd been avoiding it.  Now with PP 's recent price jump, I decided to make a switch.  Coat problems solved. [:D]

Back to the question.  The poops were much smaller on Pro Plan.  They were also more dense.  We've still got formed stools on Canidae, but they're not as tight as they were before.  There a slight increase in size, but not in number.  (Still 2x a day.)  So what is normal?  Should they be small and compact?  Am I feeding too much?  (They aren't gaining weight.)

    Thanks so much!

Well, I tried to post this earlier and got an error message. I'll try again.

I feed Canidae. I think what you're seeing is that some foods have stool firmers added, such as beet pulp. The Canidae does not contain beet pulp, and thus the stools may be slightly less dense, and maybe even slightly larger. I wouldn't sweat it.

Being quite the poop afficianado (sp?) I can say that when I changed my dogs (a couple years ago) from a less than premium food that contained stool firmers to the more premium foods that do not their poops did slightly increase in size (but not quantity) and were less dense. Not a problem.

If you're satisfied and they're happy and healthy I wouldn't worry.
