    Puppy Teeth

Hope this is the right forum to post this in.

I have a puppy that should be 5 months old today. But he still has ALL his puppy teeth, with only one being loose.
He is suppose to weigh only 10 lbs as an adult, he is 7 lbs right now. I have never had a small breed dog do their teeth come in slower? or is he really only 3-4 months old? I don't care if he ends up bigger I'm just just wondering. They said he's a mini schnauzer/jack russell mix.

Normal is around 4-5 months of age, so he's really not too much behind schedule. Have you examined his teeth for any impacting from the adult teeth pushing the baby (deciduous) teeth up, aside or out? The first to come out are usually the small teeth in the front so I'd keep my eye on them.

It is not unusual for small breeds to retain baby teeth, so just keep a watch for any impacting. If you start to get nervous or see funky stuff going on with the baby teeth, get your cute furbaby to the vet because impacting can have a detrimental affect on his adult bite.

I assume you are going to have the pup neutered and if so then the teeth can be removed at that time...If not then before long you had better get them checked because some may remain the rest of the pups life and become food catchers and infection sources.

Dvet, you're the vet right?  yes I am going to have him neutered next month. He was just at the vet for a check up and his shots, the vet checked his teeth he didn't say there was any problem. So could he be 5 months old even though he still has all his baby teeth?? (oh one on the bottom is loose)

    yes. and its not unusual

    Oh he's SO cute!

Do you let him chew bones at all?  I had one pup whose littermates ALL had problems with retained baby teeth but mine had none at all - only difference was I was the only one feeding bones every day.  I think marrow bones would work just as well, but I'm a very strong believer that puppies should have bones - good for jaw development and I believe it even helps their brains, like a baby playing with blocks.

Then he's probably starting to loose them! Welcome to the wonderful world of teething! [;)]

When he starts teething, you can freeze chicken broth in an ice cube tray, or sliver up meats like liver and freeze them. Raw meaty bones are excellent and your puppy will be busy with them for hours! There's a great toy called a chilly bone that is wonderful for teething pups. These things can make a mess so you might want to give them to him outside. Just make sure he has plenty of stuff to chew on. Dogs teeth can still be growing in at a year old.

Thanks everyone,  and I got him a knuckle bone yesterday for the first time, and he loved it.  I will give it back to him again today. He also has a bully stick that he chews on every night in bed for about 20-30 mins.
