Help! Choked on raw chicken wing!

One of my dogs choked on a chicken wing today! She started heaving after swallowing down the last of it. I tried to get her to throw it up using the Heimlich Maneuver. She didn't, but seemed to be ok after two more heaves.I was quite surprised as she's eaten raw bones for a while and is quite careful when she chews.

I'm keeping an eye on her. She's not happy when I check her tummy but oherwise she seems normal. I'm still worried though. Do you think she's ok?

I agree with Dyan, watch her closely.  I know this really scared you.

once it got past and into the esopphagus and  then into the stomach there should be no problem..uncooked chicken wings rarely cause a problem,, the cooked ones that  are hard and break sharply can be the culprits...

are you sure she was choking? sounds more like she had gotten it down into her stomach and was thinking about puking it up, but changed her mind. Honestly, people are always going on and on about dogs choking and usually it's just dogs doing voluntary puking or doing that weird backward-sneeze thing they do. I know exactly one dog that got a bone caught in his throat, and all he did was paw at his throat and face; the vet had to sedate him and pull it out, but it's not like he was in danger of dropping dead on the spot. In order for a dog to actually choke, and get his airway cut off, he'd have to somehow get the food to go down his windpipe. It happens, but it's rare. More often seen with small bits of food like kibble, or in dogs hastily gobbling a treat in mid-run during a training session, than with big raw bones.

    Hi!

Just to let you know that she's ok. Scared me to bits though. She's been eating raw bones on and off for nearly seven years and never choked before.

mudpuppy, what happened was that she began gagging the moment the last bit had swallowed (drumstick portion of the wing) and then the heaving started. Thus, I assumed that she was choking.

BTW, forgot to mention. Thanks for your help and advice everybody! [:)]

I read somewhere that as raw bone digests it quickly turns into a jelly form, so according to that it wouldnt have caused any more problems.
