Advice wanted - adding raw

A lot of important tips on this thread, but amidst the clarifications I missed how much heart (in weight) a dog might be safe to have weekly.  Also, what should or shouldn't be given frozen, and finally, what kind of bones are safe?  Are beef marrow bones a good idea?

Great info Becca.  Thanks for posting it.

Pittman, marrow bones are great....but to start, take out a LOT of the marrow.  Its pretty rich and can cause diaherra.

Wolfsoul, sadly too many people jump into raw without doing the proper research and since heart is considered an ORGAN for transplant purposes, they *think* that heart gets lumped into the organ meat category and *might* feed it every single day as part of the organ mix.  We had one gal who did just that and argued that it should COUNT as organ.  So actually, your goal and mine are the same....to keep folks from feeding heart daily, we just have different reasons for it.

My dogs get beef heart as their muscle meat.  Have for over 7 years.  My Cocker has Eplilepsy and gets heart at least 5 times a week or he will seize.  Heart is high in taurine and that helps limit his seizures.

The dogs eat about 35-40% of their daily intake in muscle meat - mainly beef heart.  I'd say beef heart makes up 80% of their muscle meat intake.

Got a 14 year old German Shepherd that wants me to get off the computer and go outside and throw the ball for her.  She ain't 'dead' yet!

Lauri, do you order beef heart from somewhere? I'd love to find a more constant source.

It's *so* hard to find, around here, and Emma could really use some, every day.

Do you have a butcher or slaughter place near you?  I ended up with 3 buffalo hearts from an abattoir near here.  I just dropped by and asked if they had any buffalo or beef heart.  Their only response was "fresh or frozen?"  I think it was a little less than $1/pound.

I get mine from a local provisions place (think big meat supplier).

One place you can go to find sources ishttp://www.ipindex.com/

It costs money to join ($19 I think) and then you can search for purveyors (suppliers) of anything in any city or state!

Forgot to add - search Yahoogroups for BARF and you'll find over 200 lists related to raw feeding.  Scroll through and see if there's one for your area.  THOSE people know where to find stuff!

I feed my guys about 40% of their daily intake in muscle meat - which is mostly heart.  How much each individual dog gets depends on their age, weight and activity level.  You can start around 2.5 - 3% of the dogs IDEAL weight.  That's the total amount fed per day.  Take 40% of that and there's your muscle meat.

These are ESTIMATES.  Every dog is different.  Start there, check the dogs weight after a week and adjust accordingly.

Also, what should or shouldn't be given frozen,

Some people feed everything frozen.  Personally, I wouldn't like to have a stomach full of frozen food so I don't feed my dogs anything frozen.
