Raw Food question

    Raw Food question

I was going to give my dogs a raw chicken quarter for the first time today. But, then I stopped. Because my one dog has a tumer in his colon from cancer and it takes him along to to go to the bathroom because of it, so I try to never give him anything that will make it harder for him to go or that would make his stool firmer.

So can he eat the raw chicken with the bone. It won't hurt him on the way back out? Just incase this would make any difference his kidneys are also failing.

right now, I homecook for him. it's a diet the vet gave me so that I didn't have to feed him the SD d/k diet.
it's cooked chicken or beef, rice, an egg, oil, egg shell. mutli-vitamin, and I add some veggies

If the diet the vet gave you is working stick with it.  don't take a chance on causing some damage.  It may be perfectly safe for him to eat the chicken,, but I just would not chance it.

I feed a raw prey-model diet which is perfect for this problem. [:D;Prey-model means that you feed 10-15% bone. So if you just want to feed raw meat as a treat, I would remove the bone. If you want to do a full raw diet, only feed 10-15% bone. If you feed any more than that, the dog may become constipated because of the amount of bone. If I feed more than two raw meaty bones a day, my dog becomes severely constipated. That's why prey model is so great. For your dog, I would also grind the bone. Raw bones are easy for a dog to digest once they are used to them, but for the first couple of weeks they make poop out bone shards.

I did have a dog with kidney failure that ate raw right up to the end.  I ground chicken wings/necks, plus boneless turkey and other boneless goodies to offer variety (my grinder couldn't handle anything bigger than a chicken wing).  He also ate, with the vet's blessing, a diet similiar to what you describe - egg, rice or oatmeal or potato (white or sweet), and again fruits and veggies for variety's sake.

If his condition is acute and you are satisfied with what your homeade diet is doing for him, I wouldn't mess with it.  There's plenty of room for variety there in what you describe.  If you really feel the raw would benefit him, check with your vet and see whether you can start cooking the meat part of the prescribed diet slightly less over time until he is eating it pretty much raw.  Then possibly you can explore ground raw meaty bones - wolfsoul's comments square with my own observation - stay under the 10% mark on bone and you should not have constipation problems.  A chicken quarter is closer to 30% bone so you don't want to start there.  My dog that is on a prey model diet eats larger meaty bones like a whole shoulder, loin, or flank.  Or, he'll get an entire bird or rabbit, in the case of smaller critters.  But this would put much too much of a burden on an unhealthy system unused to eating this way, so again, if possible I think the wisest way to go is to stick with what you've got going now.

Good luck - renal failure is a tough one to experience with your pet.
