    Question on feeding raw chicken

ive had my girl on part time raw for about a month now...so far she loves beef ribs and turkey necks...i have had some problems with the chicken...she will eat a couple of chicken wings but shes not to thrilled about them and when i give her chicken backs she wont eat them at all...i was able to get her to eat the back by dropping it in some boiling water for a few minutes to cook the outside a bit.....does anyone else do this or have the same problem with their dog?

I wouldn't boil the chicken.  Any heat can change the molecular structure of the bone and make it brittle and potentailly life threatening.

would u have any suggestions because i dont think the chicken is gonna work....the most she will eat is 3 maybe 4 wings which i know isnt enough for her....she weighs about 60 lbs...and like i she doesnt like the backs at all.

she loves the beef ribs but that will be too expensive to feed everyday...same with the turkey necks....they are also alot of bone...i would think she needs to get more meat than bone.
    thanks

The person to talk to is Lauric.  I *think* her website is [linkhttp://www.rawdogranch]www.rawdogranch[/link]

Do a search on idog for user and type in lauric and you should get her profile.  Your dog needs more than just meat and bones.....for example ORGAN meat should average 5% of his daily diet.....

You can simply add some boneless meat to the turkey neck. For instance Mattie is 65lbs, she usually will get an 8 oz piece of rabbit for her calcium in the morn. But sometimes I give her about 4 oz of turkey neck with added boneless. Sometimes it may be turkey meat, sometimes chicken gizzards and hearts, or lamb. She does have 2 days a week that she gets a little more boney breakfast like 8 oz of chicken wings, if she didn't like them I would find something that matched the wings nutrient/calcium wise.Night meals she gets her meaty meals and veggies.

    I'm here. :)

It could be that she doesn;t like the taste of chicken.  Now rule says dogs HAVE to eat chicken (it IS cheaper but hey, you do what ya gotta do).

When you say she is eating raw "part time" exactly how often does she get it?

Maybe you could try a different RMB (if that's all you are feeding as the 'part time' raw).  Pork beef or lamb neck bones, other parts of the chicken (the wings are the most expensive and have much more bone than meat) - try leg or thigh or leg quarter.  Try fish (whole) or duck.

Alot will depend on the total diet she's getting.

by part time i just meant that she gets kibble in the morning mixed with egg and i give her the raw for her second meal....i think it is that she just doesnt like the taste of the chicken....i'll just have to try some other things to find out what she likes besides the turkey necks and beef ribs.

shorthair...did your dog always like the boneless meat or did it take some time? what are some other good choices for boneless meat? would ground beef or turkey be ok?
