    Avocado Oil in dog food

I was always under the impression that all parts of the avocado should not be fed to dogs so I was rather surprised to find out that Avoderm, Healthwise and Flint River Ranch had avocado oil in some, if not all, their products.

Is it the quantity of avocado consumed by dogs that is of concern or is avocado oil generally ok?

I was thinking the same thing when I first saw Avo-Derm at Petco.  The ingredients appear to be good, but I wanted to make sure.  I picked the brain of a local "show" PW Corgi breeder (I have a Corgi pup), and she mentioned that avocado is not a good idea for Corgis.  Because she has a very good rep and member with the PWCCA (Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America), I took her word.  Also, I got this from a William Cusick (Studied and wrote 2 books on dog nutrition) print:

"Native food supplies for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed came from the Southern Coastal Region of Wales and, therefore, were very high in their mineral content. Since the mineral concentrations were high in this breed's native dietary intake, today's Pembroke Welsh Corgi's mineral requirement remains very high when compared to other breeds. Also, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi's dietary minerals of Calcium, Phosphorus, and Iodine should come from a coastal source.

For the Pembroke Welsh Corgi I recommend foods that are a blend of fish, lamb, poultry, potato, beets, carrots, and barley. However, I feel you should avoid feeding this breed any horse meat, beef, soy, citrus fruits, or avocado."

I now feed Canidae All Life Stages, and he's doing very well.  Perhaps avocado may be good for other breeds...I dont know.  Good luck.

Hmmm, I never even thought about that!! I'm thinking maybe it's like how a dog that's allergic to chicken won't have a problem with chicken fat.... I could be wrong though and I'm interested to hear other opinions!

Isnt it something called 'persin' which is found in and around the skin that is the problem??

I regularly give my dogs avocado, they love it and is full of great oils which helps alot with skin and coat issues.I rotate my oils regularly which avocado oil is part of.

My concern about Acovado was due to info that I found on website of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center:

    AVOCADO
Did You Know… Avocado (Persea americana) is not an advisable food to give to pets? Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as Persin. The Guatemalan variety, which is the most common variety found in stores, appears to be the most problematic.

The primary concern in dogs is with gastrointestinal (GI) irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea. Typically, these effects occur in dogs that have scavenged on significant quantities of fruit, branches or other material from the plant. Birds and rodents appear to be particularly sensitive, and can develop respiratory distress, generalized congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart, and possibly death from consuming avocado.

Someone from another board confirmed that it was the pit and the skin that was poisonous.

Edie, I find it very interesting that you rotate your oils. What oils do you use to supplement and how do you rotate them? Also, what is the dosage of Avocado oil that you use for your dog?

Sakura i just wrote a really detailed post that didnt want to post and then disappeared [:(]

Basically i give wild salmon oil in the mornings and rotate nightly with either wheatgerm oil, safflower, flaxseed,EPO and avocado oils. I also give cod liver oil a couple times per week in the summer and 3-4 times per week in the winter months. My bull mastiffs get around 2 tbs of any of the above oils mixed in with their meals.

I have a real obsession with rotating stuff,i change foods very regularly too, they rarely get the same kibble two days in a row. They are in tip top condition, great skin, coat, weight and no digestive problems.
