Kibble, poultry and other odds & ends

Right now I'm feeding a combination of Solid Gold Wolf Cub, Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice and some raw. I've experimented with different protein sources and found out that my guy will not tolerate poultry at all. So the main proteins he gets are from bison, lamb, and salmon.

I like Solid Gold because they vacuum pack the food and the ingredients list seems like stuff I would eat. I'm just curious if anyone has any more info about the company, or has had any experience with the foods.

Where I got Kit & Gipsey from their breeder feeds Solid Gold. I like the way the bag is vacuum sealed. He gave a bag to us to slowly change them from that to raw. It was the Hundchen Flocken. They did really great when they where on it.

Hi fellow sighthound owner! One of mine is allergic to chicken, so I also buy red meat and/or fish kibble. My boys do well on Wolf Cub. They also did fine on Blue Buff but I dropped it due to the menadione issue and the high $. Now they are on Timberwolf Elk and love it!! I will continue to rotate in Wolf Cub.

SG (as a food) is held in high regard by most forum members and by the experts like Mordanna. The only criticism of it I've seen is by the infamous Dr. Remillard, which is, ironically, equivalent to an endorsement in the minds of most around here.

I have a chicken-intolerant dog but he can't eat the SG stuff for other reasons. I do like that it won't make him react if he gets a mouthful of someone else's food! We use a couple SG foods in our rotation in combination with raw and have found it to mesh with a natural diet exceptionally well. We use the Holistique Blendz for the less active winter months and the Mmillenia for the hot active summer months (barley is a "cooling" grain as opposed to oats which are "hot").

I wish they would come out with a simple fish or duck based formula but I'm afraid Ben's going to be odd man out, always.

Is it my imagination or has there been a "bloom" of chicken or poultry intolerance in pets lately? Maybe I'm just sensitive because this has come up recently for us.

I think if you use the search function, you will find lots of good things have been said about Solid Gold.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't know why but I was told that PHs do not digest turkey at all (so all the thanksgiving leftovers are given away.) With his chronic loose stool problem I started changing foods (he was on Iams, Euk, and he started out on one of the "higher end" Purina products- because they sponsor his breeder) but through it all he's been a trooper.

Another thing I've noticed, and maybe this is just him; After we've been at the park for a bit, he'll decide it's time to run. He's already had one BM so what he does is empty EVERYTHING out of his bowels before he runs. It's always a loose mess, but he won't really run without doing it. Afterwards he'll run for 10-20 minutes and won't let any dog catch him. He'll always stay one length ahead if he knows the dogs and 10-20 feet in front if he doesn't know them.

Sighthounds are great, aren't they? Your dog is lovely.

We "empty" our dogs if at all possible before a hard workout like a long gather or a sheepdog trial run. The dogs usually sense they are going to be pushed hard and, loving work, are excited and sometimes it's loose.

It would be a useful thing to put a command on it if you haven't already - very handy when you travel, or if you start going to lure chasing or coursing.

Jessie had loose stools on Eukanuba at least twice a week and about once a week on Nutro Natural Choice. When I changed her to Eagle Pack Holistic Duck & Oatmeal the problem disappeared. I think it may be because there are digestive enzymes in the Eagle Pack but I don't know for certain; you may want to try adding digestive enzymes like Prozyme to his food to see if it helps. Your dog is gorgeous. Jessie is also allergic to chicken; beef is supposed to be the number one cause of food allergies in dogs but on this forum at least chicken seems to cause more problems.

I agree - every dog I've owned has eaten beef (usually BBQ hamburger) without problem, but chicken is something many people say their dogs have trouble with. Makes sense - wild dogs eat far more red meat than white!

I envy you! That would be so much fun to see (my old whippet that lives with the ex used to do the same thing with our bull terrier) but I can't take mine to a park - they treat small dogs who run as prey.

I'm sorry for that. I know there have been times when he's run up against certain GSDs that try to treat him as prey....SURPRISE!! This prey has teeth!!! Lucky for me that when he does allow himself to be "caught" he'll hide behind a bench or something, or run between my legs and stop. I've seen him elude 12-15 dogs for around ten minutes, even the herders. He'll fake 2 or 3 times and if they don't bite on the fake, he'll go up and over them. We've got very few whippets in our park however and only a couple of greyhounds so he's not used to getting caught unless HE wants to!

Also a piece of good news about my boy...We went to a dog show this weekend in SC and I was basically told that he's a show quality dog and I need to get off my butt and start showing him!!! So guess what's gonna happen to my "quiet" weekend time...
