Special nutritional needs for Goldens?

Thanks everyone for the congrats and the help!  I'll get a picture of the boy up when I have time.  Ruby loves him, btw. luv4gsds, I think it's the outer shell of the corn that they can't process and according to Eagle Pack, and that's why they remove it to get the useable stuff inside. doglover, I've been looking into putting some type of oil on his food because his skin is really dry - where do you buy salmon oil?

    Congrats on your new puppy!

As far as Golden Retrievers and their nutritional requirements, I'm definitely not an expert, but when I worked at a vet clinic I noticed a lot of Goldens with yeasty ears, itchy skin and hot spots. I would ;probably avoid any foods with corn and also choose one with as few grains as possible.

my3sons, I buy Grizzly Salmon Oil from the feed store where I get dog food. We've had great luck with it and the dogs love it. It says on the website to only give 1/2 the normal dose to a puppy though.

I agree with luvntzus last post, goldens do seem to be prone to allergies and their breed does have a very high cancer rate. Since cancer cells thrive on carbs, particularly grains, a low/no grain diet would probably be a good idea. Natural Balance's Potato & Duck and Sweet Potato & Fish are probably the only grain-frees that are okay to feed to a large breed puppy, and you might be preventing allergy flare-ups. [sm=2cents.gif]

Goldens are known for certain things - lots of hair (it will be everywhere), allergies (benefit from an Omega supp), and higher rates of some cancers.

My goldens have always had a good food, VitaCaps, joint supplements by age 6,  and regular exams. Lost my last (and most dearest friend) to cancer of the spleen.

All in all, I would still ;prefer a Golden. Just buy a good undercoat rake and a stout vacuum!

Have fun with your new baby!!
