Calcium, not enough in foods?

    Calcium, not enough in foods?

I am going to buy Calcium Citrate, but I was wondering why cottage cheese, yogurt, Salmon etc. is not enough calcium. Trudy is so small, I have heard some people say enough calcium is in the right foods, and some say it has to be measureed perfectly.

It's because meat has a LOT of phosphorus, and you have to balance the calcium:phosphorus ratio to somewhere between 1:1 and 2:1.  There is so much phosphorus in meat that it would (probably) be impossible to add enough calcium through foods.  Or, if you attempted it, I suspect the diet would be deficient in a lot of vitamins/minerals/amino acids because you'd be feeding such a huge percentage of dairy products (and so would have to exclude other things).

It also seems to me that many other commonly used ingredients (veggies, etc.) have significantly more phosphorus than calcium.

You can use this site to look up the phosphorus and calcium content of whatever ingredients you use, so you know how much calcium to add:

This is the website that will give you the information about how much calcium and how much phosphorus is in the foods you feed. Then you add a supplement to achieve the proper ratio. I'm sure you already know this but different forms of calcium such as carbonate and citrinate have different absorbancy so you will need different amounts.

Thank you... Time to study some more! I appreciate it.

    Sallya,

be aware not to use the eggshell ratio with calcium citrate.  Each one has a different amount of elemental calcium - so you have to go by what's on the back of the bottle as to how much is in their teaspoon.
