I'm sure this has been posted but . . .

With all the hoopla regarding tainted foods etc. I am at a loss for where to go with winstons diet.  He eats Ca. Natural L&R puppy dry and really is doing well on it, but I want to add variety with some toppers.  I was using Innova canned, Wellness Canned, and the Ca. Natural canned mixed into a gravy with some water but I'm hesitant to keep buying this stuff . . . .

What I'm looking for is a nice, easy recipe that I can prepare AS A TOPPER . . . not a stand-alone meal.  Something to throw into a crockpot and put into jars for the freezer or something that I can mix with kibble for added nutrition, but mostly variety for the little guy (who's not so little anymore).

Maybe the recipe I use to supplement Jessie's food would do; [:D]  For every three and a half ounces of meat, you add two ounces of a root vegetable (potato, sweet potato) and 1 ounce of green vegetable. The only supplement you need to add is 250mg of calcium for every three and a half ounces of meat. Powdered calcium citrate and calcium carbonate are easy to find, and one fourth tsp. is 250mg. I cook enough once a week to last several days. For example;  I use is bison and after the 14 oz. pkg. I buy is cooked, it weighs 12 oz. I combine this with about 7oz. of parsnips ( Jessie's allergic to potatoes) and three and a half ounces of broccoli. I add about three fourths tsp. of calcium.

Shonin- you can just cook up meats in the crockpot and add some veggies if you want. I do chicken, beef and lamb and apples as "toppers".  Also if you are looking for canned toppers you can try evangers 100% meats. they are ONLY Meat and are not intended to be a completel diet.  You can also feed green tripe as a topper since there are no fillers, etc...

For my 3 golden retrievers, I start with 5 pounds of chicken thighs, cover with water, bring to boil, turn crock pot down and cook all night.  Next morning i add another ound to pound half of another meat--varies from week to week  i use cut up calf liver, chopped up chicken gizzards, chicken livers, ground turkey, sometimes by rarely ground beef.  Also add a l pound bag of frozen green beans, some chopped up sweet potates, chopped up apples, and depending on the size and amout of sweet potatoes and apples, (or sometimes pears), I will add carrots, fresh squash, frozen broccoli, etc.  Bring back to boil, reduce heat and cook til like 5-6:00, total of about 24 hours.  I put this on top of 1 1/2 cups of dry food at night.  They also get 1 cup of dry in the morning.

The chicken stew lasts me 5 nights.  Get canned mackeral or salmon (or fresh fish i have some) and can of unsalted mixed veggies the other two nights..  I don't add anything in the way of sups to the stew.  On the side, my dogs get 2 fish oil, one vitamin E, an EsterC, a biotin, a Breer's yeast table every day.  My 12 year old gt a milk thistle and a cranberry cap every day, and he and the almost 8 year old gts joint sups.

This week i did a little diffeent and added a pack of chicken necks with the thighs.  I added the ground turky the next morning.  All told, they get 2 1/2 cups of dry and one cup of stew or fish/veggies each day.  i do add a little yogurt and soemtimes some cheese or baby food to their breakfast meal.
