Salvaged Pet Food becomes Food for Livestock

As I understand it per comment from Diamond Pet Foods that it is common practice for manufacturers to sell salvaged pet foods as feed for livestock.

I know that I don't know much about the industry but it just does not sound good. For most pet food, the ingredients are pet grade (below human grade). those pet foods that are salvaged then become foods for livestock that we human would eat. So, do we really eat human grade food?

I know I think too much. It must be the wheat gluten in Chef Boyardee Ravioli that I ate last night.

Ha Ha Ha, are you sure it wasn't made in China using human grade ingredients! My boys use to like the occasional can of ravioli for lunch during the summer, but liked my home made better.

What do you mean by salvaged pet foods? Foods that can't be sold because they expired or something?

One more reason to only eat grass-fed meat.

This is only true of non-ruminants. Sheep, goats, deer, and cattle cannot be fed feeds with ruminant products in them. It's always been true that pork and poultry kind of get the leftovers.

From what I have read, salvaged pet food has nothing to do with expiration dates or rotted food or anything bad like that.

At the beginning of each "run" of dry kibble, a certain portion of the food comes out with a higher moisture content than what is desired for dry, bagged dog food. Since this food is too moist to be bagged for dry dog food, it is sold for animal feed.
