COSTCO'S "KIRKLAND" LABEL NEXT ON RECALL HIT LIST? 04/26/07

Just received this email from Therese, who runs the [linkhttp://petsitusa.com/blog/]PetSitUSA blog[/link] and maintains [linkhttp://www.thepetfoodlist.com/]ThePetFoodList[/link]. We will report more on the Kirkland canned food recall as details become available.

I just got of the phone with Costco and American Nutrition. Both have confirmed that Kirkland Signature canned food has been recalled. American Nutrition just announced it and doesn't have an official statement yet but they'll contact me as soon as it's available.

Therese at the [linkhttp://www.thepetfoodlist.com/]Pet Food List[/link] has just gotten off the phone with Costco and American Nutrition. They have confirmed with her the recall of Kirkland Signature canned food.
We#%92ve just confirmed with Costo by phone as well.
Kirkland Signature Super Premium Canned Food, item # 38436, best buy dates of Aug. 21 08 to April 15 of 09, has been voluntarilly recalled. We don#%92t yet know more than that.

Cazzy it may be the dry that made by Diamond and the canned that's made by American Nutrition. I'm not sure though.

Thank you for the update KCSO.

    Cazzy,

Don't through the biscuits in the trash.   Take them back and get your money back.  Why should you have to throw that money away.  I know a lot of dog foods can be returned such as dry food and treats even if they are opened, as long as they are at least half full.

Never thought about taking them back...I will do that..I just dont feel comfortable giving them now..[:@]

I agree with you Cazzy.  I wouldn't feel comfortable giving them to my dog either.  Definitely get your money back.

    Now isn't this just typical

FDA claims they were [linkunaware>http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/4/26/174253/489]unaware of either of theses recalls[/link]. It#%92s amazing that after more than a month of recall after recall, that the FDA still can#%92t get a handle on the information before the blogs do.

Itchmo has learned that the recall covers two formulations sold in a single case:
    • Kirkland Signature Super Premium Chicken and Rice Canned food for Dogs
    • Kirkland Signature Super Premium Lamb and Rice Canned food for Dogs

    • Gold Top Dog
they were unaware that any ingredients in their food came from China, or that there was rice protein powder in any of their foods. Rice protein powder is not listed on the label; the label ingredient in question is “rice flour.”

I just got out of an FDA media teleconference, which I [linkhttp://www.petconnection.com/blog/2007/04/26/pet-food-recall-liveblogging-426-fda-press-conference/]liveblogged[/link] on PetConnection, in which the FDA's David Elder said something to the effect that the FDA isn't aware of any additional pet food recalls at this time.

Update 4, 8:32 PM ET: I just spoke to Costco's food safety VP, Craig Wilson, and wrote it up on [linkhttp://www.petconnection.com/blog/2007/04/26/pet-food-recall-costco-speaks/]PetConnection.com[/link]. He said it was the FDA that found the melamine in their food in its tests, so I don't see how the FDA can say they didn't expect any more recalls. THREE MORE have been announced since that press conference today!

Costco says they didnt know the ingredient was in their food.
They also say they'll be sending letters to everyone who bought the food.  I'm interested to see if thats true!

I'm taking it back this weekend, letter or no letter......  but at least they scan your card every time you buy something, so it is possible for them to have the necessary information to contact their customers.

Too bad we just finished a case right around the time this all started and I didn't keep the information........
