Can I feed Evo kibble to senior dogs?

since the senior dog in question is perfectly healthy I don't understand why we are so worried about his kidneys. EVO won't CAUSE him to develop kidney disease. If he actually has kidney disease then we would be having a different discussion about how to formulate a low phosphorus/ high protein diet.

I do prefer Timberwolf organics wild n natural to Evo, because EVO does have that very high ash level (ash is just minerals). TWO is often harder to find. I don't like Barking at the moon because they put that potato protein concentrate in there. I don't like Natural balance because although it is grain free it has a very low protein level.

I honestly don't understand why its so hard to think of both dogs when choosing a food, especially when their needs are so different. I have two tubs of food side by side. Put the dishes on the counter, 1 cup scoop in one tub, 1 1/2 cup scoop in the other tub. Scoop, Scoop, add my fatty acid capsules, and put the food on the floor. It doesn't take me any longer than if I had a single food, except the time it takes to lock two lids instead of one. Really... not that big of a deal.

I understand what you are saying but each dog right now is on a different dog food, and it is just difficult.
I would like to have both dogs eat the same thing, and I do not think that is very hard to do either.

And it actually IS hard to find to find a good for either of them...I want to go Grain Free....my choices are:

-Natural Balanlance- Do not want to but their grain free because it has mostly starches and also since their brand got recalled.

-TWO- Not available in my area...considering having it shipped, but it is costly and I am just a college student.

-Solid Gold- Like Mudpuppy said it does have potato concentrait in it and I would prefer to stay away from that.

-EVO- Getting mixed feelings from it. I would like to feed this food, but I feel like if I am I might be hurting Lacey in the long run. I personally think she would do fine on it. She is healthy and other then her Neuromuscular disease (which she sees a Neorologist for and is on Prednisone) she is healthy.

She is also only 35 pounds and at 10 she is not THAT old.

So I do not have that many choices, unless I want to feed Lacey what my mom feeds the others and that is Kibbles N Bits and Nutro. No thanks. So I need to find something for them both.

Who would have ever though Dog Food could be such a challange!

You may already be aware of this, timberwolf shipping is free if you order direct from them.

Oops just saw your post on another thread, you already know about the free shipping. Just ignore above stmt...[:D]

I would watch the fat content though, since you have an older dog (in case he could get Pancreatitis).

Nature's variety also has a grain-free food. You could also go raw, either home-made or pre-made. Many stores in my area have put in freezers and sell pre-made raw. The nature's variety raw foods are lovely, but a bit expensive.

I'm now feeding EVO to all of my crew...from a 14 wk old border puppy up to a 9 year old border girl and a 9 year old toothless pap.  I talked to Natura and they sent me the DETAILED instructions for feeding a pup EVO and said that since she's not a large breed dog, she'd be fine.  Interestingly enough, I switched her almost cold turkey to the EVO off of Wellness and although she had mushy poop on Wellness, if firmed right up on EVO.  I've read several articles and spoken to several canine nutritionists and they told me that as long as the dogs were healthy, there isn't a problem feeding a senior dog high protein.  I add water to the EVO right before serving it to make sure they get lots of water, make sure they have access to water throughout the day, and will monitor blood work on them as well.  Nobody's weights have gone up and although some of them are very active, some are pretty much couch potatoes.  I will say that I feed a bit less that the recommended amounts (ex. my border boy eats 1.75 cups of kibble instead of 2.0 cups of kibble).  I'll probably be switching over to Sojo's and raw meat in the next few months, but for right now, I'm pleased with the EVO.

Again, every dog is different and what works for some doesn't work for others!  Sometimes you just have to experiment to find the right combination.
