Should I switch to Hill's Prescription?

I was assuming that you are considering the Canine Caviar for your Westies that are now on Kumpi. I, personally, think that Kumpi is a complicated food, and that Canine Caviar is a better choice, however, if your dogs are doing well on Kumpi, there is no reason to switch.

I think that for Max and Alley, the best course is exactly what you are doing--NB Duck with a bit of added W/D to firm up their stools.

Poor, little Louie---he can't seem to catch a break, can he? Have you tried feeding him NB Duck with W/D or is he not interested in that either? Will he eat the W/D? It may help to solve his issues---Has your vet suggested homecooking a bland diet for him temporarily to just to get him eating again?

Louie was on Duck and Potato for 3 years and we needed to get him off it with all his problems and find a new food. He is eatting the Kumpi and I add chicken to it. He eats a bit of the W/D canned too. Max can benefit from a bit of firming up in the stool dept but Alley is fine.

Max and Alley are and have been doing great on the Duck and Potato NB.. its just when Max sees me get a can of W/D out his eye balls pop out of his head..LOL

Iv homecooked for Louie.. Iv stood on my head for Louie.. Iv got out the fine china and linens for Louie...[;)] Nothing works. He is such a strange guy about eating... Its enough to make a person bonkers.

Im curious as to why you think Kumpi is a complicated food. Im still not sold on it. I may be wierd but I have to feel good about what I feed my dogs...and Im still out on my thoughts on Kumpi.

Look at Willowchow---she has had great success with her IBD dog by using I/D to stabilize the condition, then slowly introducing commercial foods. Two different dogs, same condition, two different courses of treatment. You need to do what you think is best for your dogs. Best of luck.

I so agree with this... I guess with 5 dogs Im a bit nuts cause everyone seems to need something different now that they are getting older.

My Westie Zoey really needs to be on W/D my vet said because her urine was showing high PH and something else.. she said she will benefit from it and since she hates Kumpi that is what Im doing right now for her.... Poor girl LOVE Royal Canin but her poops were soft serve... [:'(] but Im glad she is off for more than that reason ...

I see that you Willow and others add other canned stuff to the Fish and Potato? My thoughts were you needed to stay with the same protein as the dry food?

No, not if they tolerate the mixing.

But, you've got to get to a point where they are stable first, then add in new things one at a time.

My dog was huge pain about this because the routine went, i/d only--and she did accept that when she was really not feeling well--but once she started getting better wasn't really into plain i/d.  So, I started adding small amounts of beef, slowing increasing the amount to where she had a normal amount for a topping.  Then once that was OK for awhile, we tried a new one.

Just keep in mind you want to introduce one new thing at a time too.

I wish I figure out why Louie never wants to eat. The specialist is even stumped. Im done everything.....I wonder how you get a dog stablized when they simply don't want to eat?

    Kim---

I'm sure Louie still associates eating with not feeling well.

Have you tried feeding Louie tripe?  Dogs love it-----it is sooooo stinky, and easy on the GI tract.  Often used to get sickly dogs that have lost their appetite to eat.
It also has other great health benefits as well.  I feed tripe with Oscar's meals at least a few times a week.  Tripett is a good one. Here's a link:

Its been at least 3 years since Iv done tripe... but I kid you not.. he will turn his nose up...

I posted on the NB thread... I started homecooking today.... Not sure how I will deal with Max yet with his IBD but he is doing okay with W/D and I do buy fresh duck and cook it...

Im SOOOOOOOOOOOOO sick off Natural Balance and what is going on right now with the canned foods that I could scream. Iv got my canned food all bagged up to go back to Petco.

Louie did eat what I cooked today but he is such a slow start to eat....

Thanks for the tripe tip :)

I went thru this too.  We kept taking her to the vet and they kept trying to tell us it was behavioral.  I had a gut feeling that it wasn't, mother dog instinct I guess you could say.  I kept pushing for them to take blood, weigh her, ect.  I remember the last really bad episode she had lasted a few weeks and she went down to 42 lbs.  (She's 51+ now).

Anyway, finally after finding a low white blood cell count they put her on a particular antibiotic that she had never had before.  It also had a high probability of not agreeing with her.  But, the vet wanted to try it.  She only managed to do about 5 days or so before it started making her sick.  But, it was long enough to help whatever was going on.  She did have a few follow up blood checks.  And, after checking several more times and finding the same results decided that she was stable as far as white blood cells.  But, also the antibiotic also helped her GI issues.  After the side effects of the actual drug wore off, she was a different dog.  She ate well, played, etc.

She did and still does remember foods that make her sick.

Has your vet checked your dogs blood counts, etc. recently?

Also, I found during those times that she didn't want to eat her regular meals that letting her eat whatever she'd eat helped too.  It's very hard for them to get back eating once they completely stop.  So, let him have whatever he feels like it right now to keep him at least eating.  Worry about balance, etc all that later.

PS---I also noticed in the other thread that you mentioned you were cooking up meat, gizzards ,veggies, etc.  That's great but I think that's going to send this particular dog over the edge.  Way too much.  You need him on  something bland, like rice, meat and supplements.  That's what I'm doing until this whole food thing blows over and then I'm going to find a kibble that works and that I feel somewhat confident in feeding.

But, all that variety is not good especially when he's not feeling well.

Willow wouldn't touch tripe either.  And, she knocked the bowl over and walked off.  That stuff isn't coming in my house again either.  I was nauseated for a day for nothing!

Louie LOVES bland.... Im only doing rice.. chicken and green beans and Lori I only let Louie eat when Louie wants to eat.... Everything you have said I completely agree with. He actually didn't walk away from this after our hike this morning.
Can Louie come stay with you for awhile? Maybe you can turn him around for me [;)]
My specialist said the same thing are you.. just let him eat as long as he will eat. He hasn't lost any weight he is still overly plumped from being on pred for 3 months and I still see the effects of that crap.... Im not sure how long that takes to get out of their system?
Iv had all the blood work done... the up and lower GI work done... I don't know what else I can do? Iv left no stone unturned.
I do appreciate comments and help and suggestions... Ya just never know there maybe something I haven't tried.

Louie can definately come stay anytime.  We've got plenty of bland food and my brother's Scottie would love to play!

Were do you live?? Little problem.. did I mention that Louie hate his brother Max... Max is a Scottie and I think more than 1/2 of Louies eating issues is that Louie wants Max out of here... I kid you not... But Max isn't going anywhere. Louie is a momma's boy and wants me all to himself.

I just homecooked for the dogs and they ate like piglets.... they seem to miss all that I use to do as I use to homecook alot and got away from it casue it was consuming so much of my life and time and the cost... well Im back at it and there wasn't anything left in anyones bowls :) So its worth it... I guess Im to the point were I want my dogs to have REAL food... When I pop open a can of W/D that looks like flour and paste I don't feel good about them eating that :( Will see were this takes me... I will just keep the W/D as a treat or snack.

Get this Lori... Louie has been loving the food today... NO KIBBLE... just the rice veggies and chicken.. the Scotties had cooked Duck. Im keeping Louie away from Duck since he was on it for 3 years....

Im going to check out Natures Variety raw diets... I did them years back and may do this for the other dogs. IM not sure  yet. I swore I would never go back to doing raw....but since this is all made up and balanced I don't mind so much.

Sounds like they had a great dinner!
I'm noticing Willow seems really hungry.  She's been begging (which she normally doesn't do) and wanting snacks.

Do what your comfortable with and what works for them.  Put everyone else's opinions about the foods aside.

FWIW--I used to add toppings to her canned i/d. I used to add in Evanger's beef or my own meats.  I sometimes added cheese or both to dress it up.
