Pork- can dogs eat it?

    Pork- can dogs eat it?

About 7 years ago Lacey went in ti the vets because she was vomiting and the vet diagnosed her with a minor case of Pancreatitis.

We had been giving her her pills in a thin peice of ham lunch meat. The vet said to NEVER gives dogs any type of ham or pork.

So I was going to switch to Eagle Pack, and now I'm realizing it has Pork Meal in it....And I'm pretty sure that I have read that some of you will give your dogs pork...(?)

So is Pork okay to feed to dogs?

I'm not sure, but perhaps your vet just doesn't know better or meant processed lunch meats, which have too many preservatives and other stuff.  Pork is just fine for dogs, and is actually considered one of the cleaner meats these days.  I did an elimination diet last year for 12 weeks (only fed pork and buckwheat) for my lab and the vet agreed that pork was a good source of protein to use.

Edited to add that I do believe that some cuts of pork have more fat than others (or other types of meat), so if pacreatitis is a concern, you'd want to look for the leanest pork you could find.

I don't think lunch meat is good.

If dogs couldn't eat pork, then Ella would have been dead a long time ago from the pig necks she's eaten.

The only way I can see a dog not doing OK on pork is if the dog has some type of sensitivity or allergy to it.

Mine get raw pork often and I sometimes use pork in the homecooked.  I dont let them have ham because of all the nitrates in it, but I don't eat it often for the same reason.

I have heard to stick to the less fatty cuts of pork.  But we are on the tail end of 2 weeks of raw pork (after 2 weeks of chicken) and Daisy is doing well with it.

Ok okay greatthanns now I know.. I had a feeling the vet was wrong. We don't use this vet anymore, but I couldn't imagine EP using Pork Meal if it was not good for them. So I will go ahead and buy it.

Im eaither going with Eagle Pack or Innova

Beef soup bones are, for whatever reason, difficult to find around here. So, I sometimes use larger pork neckbones as recreational bones for my dogs. I've yet to have a problem. [:)]

Mine also love pork, and do well, on it.

Brittany, do you have a Publix, there? Sometimes, they get soup bones. You have to go up to the counter, and ask, though.

Oooh, thanks Jennie! We do have a Publix here, but I never shop there. I'll have to stop by sometime and ask if they have any. I dunno why I have such a hard time finding soup bones. I get most of my meat from farmer's markets, but I might make an exception if it meant I could find good recreational bones. Thanks again. [:D

My sons GF has a small chi and she said her vet told her no pork,,,,, don't know if that vet is just against pork in general or is it just not good for that particular breed???  We don't know.
Not only do I feed Eagle that has pork in it, I also cook ground beef, turkey, chicken OR pork and put on top of Bubbys supper meal. HAve been for years..so I don't believe dogs can not have pork.
But I also want to say that not all of Eagle Pack have pork in it.  Unless they have changed the ingredient list since the brochures I have here...Duck Meal & Oatmeal does not have it, nor does Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon meal, nor Holistic Lamb. I don't even see pork in their Natural Lamb formula.
