Pumpkin

    Pumpkin

I've seen mention of using pumpkin for digestive problems, but I don't know the details.  How much would you give to a 50 lb. dog?  And, do you just mix it with a regular meal, give separately, or skip the regular meal and feed pumpkin instead?

Jessie is 62 pounds and my vet recommended starting with a tablespoon and increasing the amount as needed; I was trying to make her stools bulkier to help express her anal sacs. I just mixed it in her food. Some members put pumpkin in ice cube trays and feed the cubes as treats. What kind of problem is your dog having?

We are doing an elimination diet to find out what foods she's allergic to, and the most recent food trial caused loose stools.  I've gone back to the foods she was okay with, but she's still having problems.  Hopefully the pumpkin will help her get back to normal. She has a history of anal sac problems, so I don't want to let this go on too long.

She hasn't had this kind of problem before, which is why I didn't know about the pumpkin.  Her usual reaction is itchy skin and inflamed ears.

    Thanks for the help.

You're welcome; Jessie has several food allergies and suffered ear infections and red, sore feet (from licking and chewing) until we figured out what they were. She had a bad time last summer and we were blaming her environmental allergies; finally, we started an elimination diet and discovered she had developed some new food allergies besides chicken.[:o] It's true that food allergies can cause diarrhea too. Good luck with the elimination diet; I know it takes time and patience, but it's worth it.

When one of my guys has a really upset stomach I usually skip their kibble and just give them a meal of pumpkin.  My 45 lb. border collie ate an entire can and was as happy as can be.  By the next morning the  loose stool was gone.  When I am using it to transition them, I just sort of eyeball it...if the stool is loose, add more pumpkin...if things look good, I back off pumpkin and add more kibble.  It certainly won't hurt them and they love the taste.

I have read you can overdo it with the pumkin remedy, like only a tsp. and that "pure" canned pumpkin is what you should use, not the spiced Pumpkin Pie Filling Mix
