Wheat Gluten?

    Wheat Gluten?

Sorry I'm asking so many questions on here - gosh I feel dumb. I just have a simple question this time, lol. Awhile ago there was a recall on Ol'Roy bones and treats because they contained wheat gluten and the wheat gluten was contaminated with melamine which is used to make plastics and industrial products. I don't usually buy anything Ol'Roy but I did have a bag of unopened bones I threw away. I wasn't sure if wheat gluten is just all together bad or if it is okay to be in the ingredients -- but it just wasn't in that situation because it had gotten contaminated. So to make it short -- if I go to Petco, find treats I think my dogs will like but the ingredients have wheat gluten in them ..is it safe?

This is just my opinion... But I would NOT buy anything for my dogs right now that contained Wheat Gluten

Thanks for such fast replies! [:D] I threw out everything that contained it, even when I had bought the treats much earlier than the recall. I'm getting good about checking labels now, so I am proud of myself. [:)] I bought the dogs Hartz Dog Easter Eggs before the recall was out ..and I'm glad I checked those because they contained it too, so I threw those out as well. I'd just rather not risk having something happen -- even more so, something I could prevent. With all these recalls though, I'm just starting to wonder, what the heck is even safe for them to eat?

What about some home made treats..My dogs love this...Turkey Bologna ..cut it up in strips lay it on a paper towel ...then cover it with some paper towel and put it in the microwave for a min or two... let it cool ...makes a turkey jerky..keeps in the fridge

I just got turned on to these really great freeze dried meatball treats--called Grandma Lucy's.

Great idea, thanks so much. [:)] I've seen this dog treat book at Petco but it's $15, I'd like to have it. I did make them this frozen dog ice cream stuff one time and they loved it. I'm just thankful that Pedro's favorite treats were wheat gluten-free. I think he'd go nuts if he didn't have them. He's such a picky eater.

I've been drying sweet potato "cookies" in the oven at 250°. My dogs like a few pie spices sprinkled over the top. I just slice the sweet potato into 1/2" thick circles, lay it on a sprayed pan, and let it stay in the oven for 3-4 hours. They're crunchy and wonderful.
