Ketones in urine

    Ketones in urine

My mom's little rotten boy, Toby, went to the vet, today, for a checkup. He's been feeling iffy lately, and his ears are bugging him, so she got a full blood workup and urinalysis done. Poor guy has a mild ear infection, and a UTI. His bloodwork looks utterly fantastic. All of his values are great. Toby will be 14, in May[:D]

The only thing I thought was strange is that he has ketones in his urine. I've never heard anybody say it. The vet asked if he eats a lot of protein, and mom said he gets some carbs (he does, but only about 30%). I told her that he eats a lot fewer carbs than a dog food dog would. She says it's fine, but wants a recheck in 3 months

Anybody else had that show up?

If you are dehydrated or hypermetabolic you always have elevated ketones too. Was it a fasting lab draw or just regular? Most everyone who is sick at all has elevated ketones in the urine as fluid and metabolic requirements are higher with any type of illness. It's generally not something to be worried about in itself, just is an indicator that something else is going on. Urine ketones are different from blood ketone levels too :) Hope that helps.

Edit: diabetes can cause elevated ketones too, but if the other blood work is ok then probably not that. By hypermetabolic I meant either illness or any metabolic disorder that elevates thyroid hormone/growth hormone/epinepherine.

Ottoluv, it was not fasting. He went to work with me, and got groomed, this morning. We might have driven through Chic-Fil-A before work[;)] The ketones were in his urine.

That's good to know, though. He eats no dried food, and drinks plenty, so he's probably fine, right? Just his UTI and earache are affecting his need for fluid. I'll offer him some Pedialyte, later tonight.

I think your right :) Probably related to the UTI and earache, always a good idea to recheck as your vet suggested. If it's still up in a few weeks time to dig a little deeper. He's a cutie by the way!

Ketones are a natural by-product of low carbohydrate diet & fat burning metabolism.  They are simply the result of fat being burned for fuel instead of glucose, in a healthy dog/human.  They are also produced after intense exercise or during calorie restricted dieting. This process is referred to as ketosis.

There is a condition that diabetics can fall prey to called ketoacidosis in which both glucose & ketones are being spilled into the blood/urine.

The two states are frequently confused but as long as the tests are showing normal blood sugar in addition to the presence of ketones you have nothing to worry about.  I should know, I am an Atkins follower & live in a constant state of ketosis on purpose

Good to know,  Dunders. This dog is certainly not LOSING any weight, LOL. He's gained 8 pounds, in the last few years. He's now on a "partly full bowl" diet in hopes that he'll still feel like he's eating plenty, and shed a couple of those extra pounds.
