    Opinions please- byNature kibble

Okay, I'm REALLY, extremely impressed with byNature Organic canned so I'm thinking about trying the kibble. I'd like to get everyone's opinions. For a little background, one thing that Gingerbread is extremely allergic to is brewer's yeast. So here are the ingredients in the food I'm considering (with the ingredients I'm concerned about bolded):

    Pork & Sweet Potato Flavor
Pork Meal, Ground Barley, Canola Oil (Stabilized with Mixed Tocopherols), Sweet Potatoes, Flaxseed Meal, Oat Meal, Tomato Pomace, Natural Flavors, Alfalfa Meal, Yeast Culture, Salt, Taurine, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Carrots, Blueberries, Cranberries, Dried Chicory Root, Raspberries, Turmeric, Garlic, Niacin Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Selenium Yeast, Sodium Selenite, Rosemary Extract, Dried Yeast Fermentation Solubles.

I'm wondering if the types of yeast are different than brewer's yeast? One thing I read is that brewer's yeast is grown on grains like wheat, which Gingerbread is allergic to. So I'm wondering if the traces of wheat are the problem for him. Does anyone here have experience with a brewer's yeast allergic dog being able to tolerate other types of yeast?

My other concern is barley, but I wonder if it would be so bad only fed part of the time since I rotate foods...

It's not scientific or anything but I'd stay away from it if he's got problems with yeast.  Yeast in different forms may cause the same reaction.  For me, I liked it too but stayed away because of the barley.  And, I also stay away from barley in other forms like cracked pearled barley and stuff like that.

If you're interested in a pork kibble you might want to look into Back to Basics.  They've got a decent one.  I think it has corn though so that might be an issue if he can't have corn.

If he doesn't have any problems with it that you know of I wouldn't let that stop me.  But, keep an eye because Willow has IBS flare ups after about a week of eating it so he may not react right off. Anyway, I'd be more turned off by the yeast if I was you.

Thank you Lori! [:)] I think you're right about the yeast... and the thing is that it's in the food in THREE different places. I've never seen so much yeast in a food! It seems to be my luck that I can't feed the same kibble and canned to Gingerbread. I have a thing about matching, so it bugs me! Bah humbug. lol

I looked into Back to Basics and it looks really good! The only bad thing is that I've never seen it sold in any petstores around here. But, my local petstore starts carrying new foods all the time, so I never can tell. Gingerbread has never had corn before, so I don't know if he has a problem with it. I would think it's okay, especially since it's ground corn instead of corn gluten meal.

Back to Basics is a really good food. I feed it to my Pugs in rotation. Never a problem with the corn. I never hear any one comment on this food, but my guys have done great on it. Our Petsupplies Plus carry it now. They have both a pork and chicken formula. The protein/fat is 23/19, so it is moderate protein, and high fat. That is the only thing that makes me worry about feeding this food all the time, the protein seems sort of low for the fat content, but they talk about why the high fat on their site. Other dogs I know that have been on this food do really well to. This is one food that will put weight on my dogs that need it.

My Pugs digest corn better than barley, so they have done very well on the Back to Basics.
