Royal Canin Persian Cat Food

    Royal Canin Persian Cat Food

I got a question about this food. My brother and sister-in-law feed their Persian cat this formula because they said she cannot have ANY ash in her food.
They claim this kibble has ABSOLUTELY NO ash in it what-so-ever.
Is this so? And if so, is it because they bake the kibble?
    • Gold Top Dog
lol, No. Ash is just the mineral content (as in, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, etc.) of the food. Food with no minerals is not possible.

I don't know about NO ash... and there's no such claim on the website, but I've heard nothing but rave reviews from Persian owners about this food.

Yeah, I know, that's why I wasn't getting it. See, I had accidentally picked up a sample bag of California Natural cat food a while ago when I got some samples from my local dog food store. Well, when they came over today I asked them if they wanted it for their cat. I had NO idea that their cat was "on a special diet" and my sister-in-law got all snobby with me when I offered it to her and she said, "um, not if it's on that recall list." and I told her that I wouldn't feed Ella anything on that dog food recall list so that she need not worry about that. Then she looked at it and then gave it back to me harshly and said, "See, this has ash in it. My cat CANNOT have any food with ash in it. She's on a special diet. Royal Canin Persian Cat Food because it doesn't have any ash in it." I tried to tell her that that's impossible, that ALL kibble contains ash and she said, "Well her food doesn't." so I just didn't push it any further. My boyfriend said that maybe it's baked. I didn't want to really argue about it in case I was wrong. And honestly, I'm not going to argue about freakin' cat food. People just irritate me. I tried to be nice and she was a snot with me. BLAH. AND, I had a couple cans of sardine in olive oil that I tried to give them for their cat (because I had gone out and gotten Ella sardines in water with no salt added) and she got snobby about that saying that her cat won't eat them.
    Weird.

I swear to God my family is from another planet.

What in the world!? She could benefit from reading a Miss Manners column or two. [&:] I can't even fathom that reaction to someone being NICE and GIVING something. [&o] Besides that, she's uninformed. I would be tempted to e-mail Royal Canin, ask them the ash % of their Persian food and forward the e-mail to her...

Oh Becca--What have you learned???  DO NOT discuss pet food with family, EVER!!!

DO NOT discuss pet food with family, EVER!!!

That's soooo hard... My family calls me the "food nazi". I really try not to harass people, but it's really hard when I see my sister's dog's sitting there greasy, smelly, fat, dull-eyed, etc., to not say, Hey, you know what? You feed him CRAP! Buy him a decent food and maybe he'll be better off. She finally did. He's eating California Natural now, and is steadily improving. The moral of the story? LISTEN TO CHELSEA. Yep, that's it. [:D]

I guess! It was OK when I talked to my mom about. She feeds her bearded collie Timberwolf now.

HAHAHA, that's how my mom and best friend are with me. They KNOW I'm a freak about what Ella eats. My in-laws are now feeding their Giant Schnauzer Kibbles 'N Bits because "he eats it". What they don't realize is that by allowing their dog to be picky (and he IS picky because they cater to him) that that is just worsening the problem.
They won't tough love it with him, EVER. I don't know. I used to cater to Ella's pickiness, but then it got pretty bad. She would NOT eat ANYTHING unless I hand fed it to her and then she STILL wouldn't eat 95% of what I was trying to feed her.
I put an end to that and now she eats whatever I put in front of her.

Cats with urinary issues really should be eating a diet of mostly canned food.  It's crucial that they take in enough water to help their kidneys function properly, and being that they are evolved from desert animals, they are built to get most of their moisture content from their food and will not drink enough water to make up for the lack in a dry kibble diet.  Unfortunately it sounds like your SIL is not really open to suggestions though, and I know first hand how frustrating that can be.[:o]

I think families the easiest of the lot to talk about pet food with,as they cant run away [sm=devil.gif]

You can be brutally honest with them, and not have to hold back, and because you see them often you can get the pet food speech in regularly.
It's not like the people you see on walks who feed crap, who can walk in the other direction and not listen to you if they dont want [8D]

Family is definitely the easiest and best people to convert.

Chewbecca i would love to see the look on your sisters face when she hears the truth about ash. I would do what another poster advised and get Royal canin to send you the ash content of the persian formula.

that's what I think I'm going to do.
I'm going to email them and ask them.

Can anybody here say "gastric torsion"? I can't imagine how much a Giant Schnauzer would have to eat to get enough calories from a food like that. Blech!!!

Your family has some fancy critters, LOL. Food is an investment into your animal. Why would you purchase an animal that is as amazing of an animal as a Giant Schnauzer or Bearded Collie, and feed it that food? That's like buying a Ferari and filling it up with Regular gas.

I LIKE to argue[:D] Of course, with my family, I've given up. Kibbles N Bits is "a good food" because it's not on the recall list. My coworkers are the same. The other day, I was told that raw is canibolism. Yeah.

    I know, Jennie!
They have tried and tried foods with their Giant Schnauzer (who comes from AMAZING bloodlines and is of TOTAL show quality, btw. His mother has won numerous times in conformation and his father was a martial arts combat dog--whatever "term" is correct for that), but they gave up during these "feed trials" because they gave him so much and allowed him to be so picky. He gets cooked ground beef and rice added to his kibble, but you know that the dog is relying on the kibble as the base of his diet.
Man! If they could pick a food, a good food, and give me that dog for one day. I'd have him eating whatever choice of food they pick, within that one day. If the dog was picky because the food was making him sick, that's one thing, but it doesn't make him sick.

I got my mom feeding her bearded collie Timberwolf now. He is showing SUCH an improvement in coat and in his eyes.

Raw is cannibalism??? They're NOT eating others of their own kind or humans! People are so uneducated on this stuff. I am a food snot, but I TRY not to argue with people over what they feed their animals because it gets to a point in argument, where it becomes none of my business what others feed their dogs or cats. When my fiancee was feeding his geckoes lobster roaches and he found out that the roaches eat dog food, we fed those roaches Timberwolf dog food because, to me, it's one of the best dog foods and the health of his geckoes depended on the health of those roaches, so those roaches were going to get the best of the best, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, my in-laws' dog is GORGEOUS. They take GREAT care of him, they just are older and don't want to mess with trying different foods anymore. They groom him CONSTANTLY and exercise him well. My mother-in-law spends countless hours researching products for him and the dog has more leashes and collars than I can count. He's got no less than an acre of fenced in property to run free on. So, I don't want it to sound like they don't care for or love their dog; they do.
But people need to also take diet into consideration. You get out what you put in. And this dog is barely 2 years old now, so it may take some time to see the effects of Kibbles 'N Bits. I wish I could get that across to them.

And you're right. As long as it's not on "that food recall list" people think it's GREAT. And it's not.

Oh, geez, I just erased my WHOLE post!!!

Raw is canibolism, but Pedigree is "good food". It's silliness, don't you think? I *had* to tell her what was quite possible mixed into her undefined meat and bone meal. The shock was amazing. Of course, she still feeds her dogs that same bag of food. *sigh*

I know lots of folks who really love and take great care of their animals, but choose to feed bad food. Why? "They LIKE it!"

I like french fries and milk shakes, but that is NOT going to keep me healthy!

That's funny about the roaches. I've been thinking, all week, about raising meat animals, because I'm not happy with the diets of commercially raised livestock.
